There is nothing wrong with Vista, IF you bought it pre-installed then you're one of the lucky people.
Ok to solve the ipod problem: Go to apple.com. and download the itunes software. then hook up your ipod to your computer with the USB cord provided for you. then import your music to the itunes, and then download to your ipod.

Download iTunes from Apple's website, http://www.apple.com . Make sure to get the latest version. It should have Windows Vista compatibility.

go to http://www.ipodcopy.com It's better, easier to use software, that allows you to transfer music from your ipod to your computer as well (which is a major downfall of itunes). It worked just fine for me, and I also run Vista.
Also, you may want to check for the latest version of itunes. They just issued an upgrade today.

go to www.itunes.com
they have the most up to date version of itunes on there website. the cd that came with the ipod is probably out dated.

this site will give you an ipod just for completing some quick online tasks! really recommend it, especially if you're broke but really want an ipod (like me).
