Or is the cross merely a symbol? Why do people treat a mere symbol so reverently? What would Jesus think about memorializing the instrument of His death?

The Cross is both Holy and a symbol. What is wrong with that.? The reason Christians treat the Cross so reverently, is because we should not forget. Jesus does not want us to forget that He died for our sins. A graven image is like a sacred cow or some other form. The Cross is not a graven image, but a true reminder of what Jesus did to save us. I have searched the entire Ten Commandments and can not find the quote that you have written about. Please send the exact location of your point of interest. Thanks and Peace be with you, Always.

Yes and I am glad you read the Bible for yourself and came to that conclusion, but the fact is most of those comandments were carried over into the New Testament as well and had an even better understanding Ex:"thou shalt not comit adultery" people actually thought the act of intercourse was commiting adultery but Christ came along and taught whoever looks upon a woman/man with lust in their hearts commits adultery. The old law kept the Sabbath day, and that was taken away and the Lords day took it's place (Sunday) this is when all Christians came together to worship in the New Testament. Think about it if we were still under the old law we would still be sacrificing animals, the Jews would still be God's chosen people, along with other things so to make a long story short the Old law served it's purpose and the New law was made for Christians. Also read Mar 2:21 & Hbr 8:13. Most importantly read Rom 3:4. Continue to search the scriptures my friend.

Jesus would thank GOD the cross did exist. What if Jesus went on a ' catapult' or was 'cooked' boiling, roasting, or skinned ..... NO Disrespect meant, Am stateing what more possibleities did exist, Sure much more than said here.

The Cross is Power, read something lately saying " ..., lest the cross is drained of its power. ...."

1 Corinthians 1:18
[ Christ the Wisdom and Power of God ] For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Jesus , whom was here merely being the EXample. Really The Messiah couldve left the scene at any given time, was here 'fullfilling the scriptures' GOD on earth.

Memorializing a geometrical shape besides a circle or a square, or a triangle [pyramid].
"Great IDEA , GOD, " i think Jesus would say.

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,

The emblem of suffering and shame;

And I love that old cross where the dearest and best

For a world of lost sinners was slain.

O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,

Has a wondrous attraction for me;

For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above

To bear it to dark Calvary.[2]

There is a difference between the symbol of the cross and a graven image...

The cross is not the image receiving the worship.... it is not even an image of God... it is an image of a cross .... the cross reminds people that Jesus was crucified... this they know requires an answer... is this the savior or is this a man dieing on a cross.... it is not a symbol that is being worshipped as God... it is a symbol designed to remind you of the sacrifice God made...

the commandment against graven images was meant to remind people not to worship anything that man can create...

We do not bow down and worship the cross. Unlike the many people in Biblical times who actually worshipped the graven images, we worship Jesus. We display the cross as a symbol to remember His sacrifice.

Another question-- In the 10 Commandments, God commands that we have worship Him only... so what's with the Catholics praying to saints?

My thoughts on the two subjects- I'm a Christian, so I worship God and value highly what His Son has done, applying that at-one-ment every chance I get.

Regarding the crucifix- I think it's sadistic. I worship the Living Christ- Yes, He died, but He lives again! That's the great thing about what He did.

Regarding the praying to saints (anyone besides the Father)- If I have a problem with my boss, talking to one of my coworkers isn't going to fix it. I gotta go to the boss.

In the grander scheme of life, if I have a problem with (fill in the blank with whatever one could have a problem with), talking to a dead person won't do any good. I gotta go to the Boss.... besides, He's all-knowing and all-powerful, Jude isn't, Mary isn't, Francis isn't, no matter what priests, bishops, or the pope says.

BActually that is not a factual verse. King Constantine and his click of scribes changed many thing in the original Bible. He had all original Bibles burned (which was easy to do back then because only the higher priests and upper government had copies and women couldn't read. One copy was hidden by the original followers of Jesus (The Essenes) and is now available in English with historical documentation of its authenticity. Even the catholic church worshiped many saints statures. That is not a sin. A sin would be to worship false idols or idols not related to God or his representatives. Worshiping a cross which was used to murder innocent people makes no sense. (Especially with Jesus hanging on it.) That is a sin to keep him hanging on it. Lets take him down and stop sinning. After all he did say "Go and sin no more." For info google gospelofthenazirenes.com The original New Testament. Totally enlivening to know the truth of Jesus (Yesuah)

I once belonged to a sect of Christianity that does not allow instrumental music to be used during worship. I am not saying that they are not Christians but, when people focus on what to eat, how to offer worship to God and whether the symbol of the cross is right or wrong then, they are focusing on the wrong thing.

God tells us to worship in spirit and in truth. There is freedom in Christ. A personal realationship with Him is what God wants of us. The meaning of the symbol of the cross is Jesus' shed blood and His sacrifice to cleanse us from all sin.

I personally, wear a small silver cross on a chain around my neck because it helps to remind me of Jesus. I do not worship the cross, I worship the one who died on it. I also, wear it because I am proud to be a Christian. I do know that Christians are known by their love but, I also like to wear my cross because it was while on the cross that He saved me.

If the body is on the cross, it is a graven image.

The 10 commandments say not to make images of anything in heaven or below the sea. So all those catholic churches are defying God's direct commandments.

The cross is not holy. As you suggest, it is merely a symbol. Some people treat it with great reverence and respect because it represents to them the sacrifice of Christ, which set us free from sin and from death.
There is a story that, when Jesus rose from His tomb, He was followed by a golden cross. A Voice asked "Have you preached to those who slept" and the Answer came, not from Jesus, but from the cross..."Yes, I have"...
Didn't Jesus Himself say, "Take up your cross and follow Me"?
