I'm having quite a bit of trouble shedding pounds in my mid section while the rest of me is responding well to my diet and exercise routine. However I've heard that if I workout on my abs while not having achieved losing weight there, I would be building muscle under fat resulting in an even bigger belly! Is there any truth to this?

you can do a million crunches a day and you won't lose any belly fat.....a decent diet a good cardio workout like a 20 minute HIIT workout on the treadmill for 20 minutes 3 days a week, and lifting weights, building overall muscle through Weight training is one of the best fat burners since muscle needs alot of energy, so it burns alot of energy, genetics will play a role in how your abs actually look when you have no fat on them

thats wright - abdominal exercises only build muscle (especially sit ups), they dont burn fat. the only fat burning exercise is cardio 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min) - it burns fat all over your body so if your belly has thicker layer of fat is will come off slower. dont forget to combine cardio with light weight training to not lose muscle (more muscle=faster metabolism)
