With the Digitals you want various megapixel settings. The reason, the more megapixel the better quality the picture and the larger it can be blown up if you want to put on paper.
I bought my first Digital about 3-4 years ago. It a Fuji and have 3 megapixel settings. 2 megapixel, 1 megapixal and 0.3 megapixel. There better cameras with 5 megapixel settings and more I guess, but, they not cheap.
Mine had a few features I wanted, one was a Timer so I could set the camera and get in the picture. It also have a Manual Mode so I can control the Shutter Time for night pictures without a flash. This was my main concerns of what "I" wanted.
How I bought this camera. I walked into Best Buy one day and this guy ask if I needed help. I said yes, I wanted a Digital, but, really not want to spend a lot, but, did want something nice! He say; "Check this out". We walked over and here this camera, $120 Regular and was selling for $60!!!! He say; "It not have a high megapixel setting and the memory card is only 16 MB, but, it really a good camera, especially for this price"!
Heck, I wish everyday I had bought two now that I know.
Now I explain the Memory card. My 16 MB. On a 2 mpix it take 25 pictures. On 1 mpix it take 33 pictures. On 0.3 mpix it take 122 pictures.
Once a person is good at taking pictures it do plenty except on vacation. Yesterday I seen a 1 GB card for my camera for $20 at Wal-Wort!!!!! When I bought the camera they were like $80 or more, I not really remember.
For simple shots that not real important or close ups. The 0.3 work great. For important shots or far away I use the higher settings. But, for $60!!!!! Dang I wish I had bought two!!!! :-p

first things first. Think about how you are gonna use it and how big you are gonna print. Lets talk picture size, a standard 4x6 picture will look no different with a 4mega-pixel or a 7.2mega-pixel however a 5 mega-pixel should be the lowest to look for when printing 8x10. Next should be amount of zoom. most cameras have a 3x optical zoom ( the only zoom that matters digital zoom blows up the picture by increasing the pixel size and at a loss of quality) and some have a 10 or 12 times optical but are generally bigger in size. Only advantage of a higher zoom is they are good for sports shots, plays graduations, or anywhere you might be a distance away. I suggest a nice simple camera the Sony dsc 650 not a big camera can fit in your pocket, has a nice lens Carl zeiss, and good all around value.

I would like to highly recommend the purchase of a Nikon Coolpix L10 for the following reasons:

1. Besides taking well-exposed hi-quality 5 megapixel pictures, it uses a standard set of rechargeable double AA batteries which last a very long time;
2. Has a 3x optical zoom;
3. The flash setting for "red-eye" correction is on the navigator wheel and not within a submenu;
4. It's very small and light;
5. Uses inexpensive SD memory cards;
6. The digital video feature takes wonderful "sound" videos which are noise free. It records the piano very well with it's built-in microphone;
7. And the price is a mere $120 [sold at Samy's Camera, Staples.com.]

Good luck!

What's your price range?

I have a 7.1 MP which I got for 299 I believe.

If I were you I'd get something 5-7 MP and something not too small, but not huge. Compact enough to just slide out of your pocket or bag and take a picture.
