I was given 20 pkgs of microwave popcorn, and this ancient microwave won't pop it!

It is the same popcorn as traditional popcorn , so it should work ok. All the microwave does is heat the oil in the bottom of the bag until the corn pops. I can't see why any heat source wouldn't heat some oil to make the corn pop. The microwave is just a lot more convenient way to do it -- but if yours is too low of wattage to do it, pop it like you always did.

The microwave popcorn is just a convenient repackaging (at a higher price) of what people used to pop in a pan or a covered pot.

I don't understand why it will not pop in your microwave. Possibly the packages are old and the corn is too dried out to pop anywhere.

sure, why not. dump the popcorn in the bottom of a pan and remember to keep the pan moving until it is done.
