Since the evangelical athiest's on yahoo are so good at telling us Christians what it is that we believe and don't believe in (from the old yahoo news boards day's to here on yahoo answers), for instance, I never knew until yahoo atheist's told me that I apparently am afraid of science, believe the world is flat and only 6,000 years old, don't believe in evolution, don't believe in dinosaurs, and (my personal favorite) want a theocracy. So, atheist's, please tell me what I think of the Harry Potter series.

The reason I ask is I heard a story on the news about a woman that wants the series removed from school libraries in GA because she claims it's leading children into witchcraft. While I enjoyed the movies very much, and while I would assume that I believe they are just works of fiction to be enjoyed I'm sure that the yahoo atheist's will tell me exactly what it is that I believe about the movies, so please do so, so that I know whether to keep the DVD's or get rid of them.

Ray, when you have to resort to being the grammar/spelling police, you have already lost the argument.

Thanks for the reminder that we shouldn't tar everyone with the same brush. Fair point.

1. Slow down. The reason that you have the "grammar police" after you is because your question is very hard to follow. It will be easier for you to be taken seriously if you follow the tenets of proper punctuation.

2. I'm not sure what you're getting at with this question. The fact is that one of the reasons I haven't answered any questions in almost a year is that I grew tired of being assured by the faithful that in my heart of hearts I knew that there was a god. Some of the ones who took the time to get to know me through email dialogues eventually became convinced that myself and many other atheists honestly do not believe in any sort of a creator. So, this door opens both ways. I'm sorry if you've had run-ins with people who you have found to be frustrating (believe me, I can relate) but this attempt at humor is, at best, misguided.

I feel that you would be better served by trying to ask questions that actually provoke thought instead of sinking to the level of silly barbs and taunts.

I don't assume all Christians believe the same thing. Of course there are all sorts of different sects of the religion. I'm glad you don't think the world is 6000 years old, that dinosaurs existed, and most importantly, you don't want America to be a theocracy. However, there are a lot of Christians who aren't as middle of the road as you on these issues. As for Harry Potter, one of my city's local churches actually picket the theaters when a new movie from the series is showing. Other churches say its no big deal. I can't say what you think. You have to decide for yourself.

Well, as I never imply anything beyond the poser of the questions, I feel entitled to a freebie to address how your feelings of the books.

You feel that the books are solid, three-dimensional objects. Kinda roughish, like "fine leather," if such a thing exists (without being mistaken for vinyl). Maybe they're still a bit sharp on an edge or two. The feeling you get on the books is much the same as your eyes seem to indicate...corners indicating a rouglhly rectangular block, with the covers slightly larger than the intervening pages.

Even to be a progressive or moderate christian like yourself requires a large amount of denial and ignorance to continue the faith..!

In this instance you have ignored the fact that your religious "club" contains complete fruitcakes who DO assert that the world is flat, is 6000 yrs old, have a fear of science, don't believe in evolution, claim dinosaurs and humans lived side by side, ..the list is long..!

You choose to align yourself with these people and your shared faith and the denial and ignorance it takes to perpetuate it, instead of embracing the aquisition of knowledge for the sake of personal, communal and environmental understanding and improvement..

It's your choice to be a religious fruitcake, so you wear the consequences..

Well, you have to realize that if you are a Christian, you are sworn to believe and live by the bible. If you don't agree with some of the doctrines in there, then in reality, you are not truly a Christian. I hate it when 'Christians' want to pick and choose what they believe in when their God demands they follow everything in the bible. Not following the laws and doctrines by imperfection is one thing, but denying certain laws and doctrines that are clearly a part of the bible and Christian faith is another. Like some Christians like to say gays are okay despite the harsh ruling on them from the bible. The problem is that Atheist know more about the bible and Christian faith than some Christians themselves.

The way I see it, is that there is one God, one book which is his word, and therefore there should be one way of worshipping him and understanding his word. One Christian says God is against Harry Potter because it leads to witchcraft and another Christian says it is just a work of fiction, so God doesn't mind. Well to me that is two Gods. That means that one of you is worshipping a false idol. Naughty, naughty.

Harry Potter is a fictional character. Read the books or see the movies to decide for yourself.

God's a fictional character, too, so don't worry too much about what the evangelicals say either.

If the strength of your convictions can be destroyed by a work of harmless fiction, your convictions are not worth much.

Read, enjoy, learn the lessons of friendship and honor that the HP books have to teach.

Keep em - watch them every day, and raise your children to be christian witches! LOL!

I like you - I know the deal, from the other side, from all different sorts, because I rarely tell anyone exactly what it is I believe. So I'm feeling your pain and empathize with the bitterness.

None of the atheists on here are aiming their q & a at people who can think. This information about the age of the Earth and what not comes straight from the mouths of fundamentalists.
