You don't say how old you are so I will answer this two ways....first of all, did the Dr. do a blood test to see if anything else was causing the palpatations. I had hormone problems in my late 30's which were causing palpatations. Also a bad thyroid will cause them too. A blood test will be able to show if your levels are off. You can take hormone replacement or a thyroid medicine to correct it.

Secondly, I used to have panic attacks and still do in certain situations.....if it is just a simple panic attack the best thing to do is take yourself out of the situation that is causing it immediately. Stop whatever you are doing and walk away. Walk around in a peaceful area or take yourself somewhere else and take deep breaths. One of the things that cause the palpatations is an oxygen shortage. If you are having a panic attack it makes you breath faster..kind of like hyperventilating, but not as severe. So deep breathing will help alot. A panic attack is the bodies way of telling you to take a break from something....listen to it. I wouldn't take an antidepressant as someone else suggested, that is only going to mask the main problem and some of them are far more dangerous than the attack. If you take anything at all take a valium or xanax, they are medications you don't need to take all the time, you only take it when you need it. You need to take care of yourself and listen to your body. I hope this helps.

You can try therapy like hypnosis or specific breathing techniques to help. My husband has them as well and was put on Lexapro for a while. Due to my nagging, he now takes a natural substance of St. Johns Wort which has also cut down on his stress level and increased his mood to the point that he doesnt have these attacks hardly at all anymore.

I have read some litterature about panic attacks. But they allways seem to have a more scientific approach and that is nothing I need in my struggle to survive those horrible panic attacks. This is a "hand on" and very practical book. I felt it was written to me. I am sure that you are going to feel the same.

Joe Barry writes exactly how I think. The examples are perfectly described. And the method is genius. I recommend this book and thanks Joe Barry for writing it. It changes your life
