Try www.petedge.com
They pretty much have everything, and yes, the type of shears you use depends on the type of dog and the type of hair he/she has and where you're cutting. There are grooming books available to help you as well. If you can spend a little more, try www.chrissystems.com--they also have a guide for use.
In response to the guy below (Stephen)--you do NOT need to be a professional or have a minimum order to order from either of these two sites--I do it all the time.

The ones from the pet shops are not crap, if you know what to look for. Wahl or Andis are good brands for the 'do-it-yourself' groomer. Just get them from a pet store and not a walmart, pet clippers are a bit more heavy duty than your typical clippers. Plus, to order from pet edge or ryan's, most cases you need to be a pet professional or have a minimum order. Bottom line, go to a pet store and get pet specific cliipers. Cheaper for you and they will work if properly maintained.

What type of trimming. The ones at pet shops are crap. I'm a pro groomer and I order mine from www.petedge.com or www.ryanspets.com
These siscors are VERY sharp so you must be very careful. Also, one drop on the ground & they need to be sharped, so you must be careful with them. They can be very pricy.

shears need to be adjusted for tension between the blades (screw on bottom usually) & lubricated (WD isn't the best but will do) to work
