Why wear unflattering buns in your hair, no makeup, and long, prairie dresses? Is it sinful to take pride in your appearance?

By the way, I said some, not all. I'm not generalizing.

I call it the "church lady look." I think they all buy their clothes at the Dress Barn.

I believe these are people from a particular denomination. I have a group of ladies like that who shop where I work they are quiet but very nice. I don't think they get out much. I would say it may be a reason for anyone to look frumpy. Lack of funds and not getting out much.

It depends on how they interpret the biblical teachings. You have to look at the Church of Corinth that Paul was addressing and what was going on at that time.

The key was to not look like the worldly pagans women. To be different. Pagan women were pretentious, gaudy and dress sexually to to attract and beguile men.

Because Christian women were free in Christ, they felt that they could do the same. Paul was saying rather than waste your time dressing up and adorning yourself in showy clothing (like Paris Hilton), the Christian woman should concentrate on adorning herself with spiritual clothing such as meekness, gentleness, love, charity, patience, and dress with dignity and simplicity.

I personally think a Christian woman can look nice, simple (not extravagant) and neat with her choice of clothing and even wear jewelry as accessories (as long as its not too much). You don't have to wear your hair in a bun or up either. Some people really do need make-up. You don't necessarily want to look like Tammy Faye, but you can use it sparingly and still look wholesome. Paul was given guidance not a rule.

Most Pentecostal and apostolic faiths teach their women to be truly plain. It suppose to make them look holy. If they do this unto the Lord, then it is okay. But it is not a rule.

Although I'm light years from being considered a fundamentalist...

I wear braids or a ponytail, no make up, and cargo shorts with a black shirt everyday. It has nothing to do with pride or lack thereof, but just with being comfy. (And emulating Arwen from Lord Of The Rings, of course...)

Yes, it IS a sin to take pride in your appearance.

Boy, do I love sin.

I think you are describing Pentecostal women. They have strict rules about dress and hair, etc.

I've never seen that. Pretty much every religious girl I've seen dresses like every other woman.

Well maybe some of them are more focused on important things and they don't care to follow the latest trends. What is to you? Don't be so shallow.

They don't want to tempt men to sin, apparently. And looking like that, they don't tempt anyone.
