I don't have a religious background, so bear with me. What's the deal with them? I mean, do people just disregard the Old Testament and follow the rules of the New Testament? If so, why do people even quote or read the Old Testament?

The Bible was written according to God's will. The Testament of Jesus Christ is apart of that will. We live by the New Testament and it's teachings for the Old Testament stands as a reminder of what befall the world were it not for what Jesus did for us.

Jesus died for our sins because God loves us. The New Testament sanctifies that Love by sharing the miracles that took place over 2000 years ago.

The Old Testament had 10 commandments which encompassed many laws. No one could follow them. The New Testament basically consists of two commandments involving love. Love your neighbor, friends, enemies everyone or at least try. The Jewish people hold to the Old Testament, while Christians follow the New Testament or at least that is how it should work.

the old testament covers the old covenant god made with his people adn the promise of a messiah, the savior,as seen through prophesies and promises throughout the old testament. we then have the new testament that deals with the new covenant that god made to all, jews and gentiles(every race that is not jewish) and so we all lay claim to the kingdom god established for his people. this new covenant perfected the old and this was done through the messiah spoken of in the old testament namely jesus christ. the old testament many say is revealed in the new testament and the new is hidden in the old. this site has a free study course if you are interested in looking further into this, all you need do is register, which is very quick and do it at your own pace, the first course deals with what you are asking here, the others are good but it is up to you and just a suggestion. www.salvationhistory.com

the reason we read it aswell is the same reason we study history, such as the forefathers, the cold war, world war one etc.........if we don't know anything of our past we don't know anything of our future.

Actually this is a good question. We are not bound by the Old testament because it was under the law. So, after Christ died when fell under Grace. But if you read the bible alot of things are the same in some areas of our life. And you also find some were changed.Even tho the Old doesn't apply to us it doesn't hurt to refer back to it and learn a lesson from it.Christ cam not to change the law - but we he died alot of the Old testament was nailed to the cross. For example in the Old men could have whores ( basically) and cheat on their wife's especially if their wife couldn't have children and they also were allowed to have several wives. But in the New testament Christ death changed that. This is just one example there are many more. I hope I answered your question for you to understand.

Some people dsregard the OT, yes. Many modern groups do. However, when the book was compiled by the Council of Nicea, it was meant to be read in entirity. The OT tends to be focused on the history of man and God, and god's rules for mankind, up tot he conception and birth of Jesus. The NT focuses on the life of jesus, his death and the interpretations of his teachings, as well as what is considered end times.

A good minister sermonizes out of both, showing the fullness of the religion's texts. Other focus on on the life of Jesus, giving the idea that the past was unimportant.

"The Old testament is the New Testament concealed and the New Testament is the Old Testament Revealed"

Jesus fullfilled the O.T. prophecies of the Messiah, therefore, we are judged by O.T. law (the 10 commandments serve as guidlines for living our lives), but we are saved by Jesus' work on the cross and resurrection if we believe and follow the commandments. God bless.

The NT is the OT fulfilled. Jesus said I didn't come to do away with the law but to fulfill the law. The law is the OT. The Bible also says that God is the same yesterday, today, and forevermore. So God hasn't did away with the OT why should we. Paul stated though that we are not saved through works as the men and women where before Jesus was born. We are saved by grace which we recieve through faith.

While it's true that the Christian Greek scriptures (NT) are perhaps most relevant to Christian life, we learn much from reading the Hebrew scriptures (OT). We through Gods dealings with Israel much about His personality and the way he feels about many things. It also provides us with many prophecies (most of which have already been fulfilled), some of which point to Jesus as being the Christ.

The law given to the Israelites (the Mosaic law) was meant to point out our sinful nature and the need for redemption from sin and death. The Messiah was to provide that redemption, and he did. The law Jesus gave us while on earth is more effective and all-encompassing, because it is based on principles (primarily love), and not black and white rules.

The OT should never be disregaurded.

Just take a Bible, and open it to where the OT ends and the NT begins. The OT is 3/4 of the Bible!

They are both vital to the Christian walk. Jesus is the fulfillment of the OT, but that does not make it any less of an important reference.
