It is an ending of a poem... it goes,

"I am the Captain of my fate
I am the Master of my soul"

-it means, for me, that the persona suffered a tiring life. It means sacrificing a lot but not giving up and keep on standing up no matter what because the only one who could help himself is him.

I really do not get what you mean by 2 books to support it...

I think it is from Tennyson, the poet laureate of England at one time. He's saying that each person controls his or her destiny through self-determination and belief in oneself.
Just check to see if it is Alfred Lord Tennyson, though.
