I for one think its wrong. My sister uses that method on her kids, and to me, they're pretty well behaved. They get whipped for stupid stuff like not putting on the dish washer or watching T.V past bedtime or even for getting to put up a common dish. I was also disiplined like this as a child, but don't u think it's time to break that cycle?
I think using a less agressive method would be better.

I think things arent that simple.. if all it took was a please dont do that then all kids would be well behaved. I personally use timeouts but i have friends who have read every book and the only thing that helps is a spanking. This does Not mean I agree with hitting a child over every little thing. But i think sometimes a butt whoopin is in order. I also think that butt whoopin age begins at like 5 and stops at 11.. and whoopin doesnt mean beat the crap out of either.

I think there's a big difference between "attention-getting discipline" and "corporal punishment."

Giving your child a "rap" on the hand or the bottom is perfectly fine, but I would only use these methods to really get the child's attention and make him/her realize that what he/she is doing is wrong all the time, in all situations (grabbing at a hot stove, saying bad words, hitting another child, etc.) However, taking off your belt or using an open slap to the face or anything to that scale is definitely wrong in all circumstances.

On the other end, giving your child a "time out" is absolutely worthless. It gives them no sense of the severity of their actions, and basically lets them know that whatever they do, it will all be fine after 5-10 minutes of "alone time."

There are times when you need to be stern without being abusive, and without being complacent or enabling.

That's when I believe a good "rap" and a stern "NO!" is in order.

I think whippings are ok, as long as it is not abusive. I think that form of discipline need to be taken with children these days because I feel as though they will behave much better than those who don't. If kids are getting whipped now a days then I think they wouldn't be in so much trouble. But the government have to step in and call it abusive if you whip your child. But I say the heck with that. I will not have my child run over me. My child is older now so whipping is out of the questions.

I have 3 children ages 13, 11 and 8. I have NEVER had the urge to hit either one of them.

Spanking, whipping, smacking, yelling, calling names, showing you are a strict parent.....really teaches kids how weak their parents actually are.

Do you know who hits people??? COWARDS!!!!

Your sister is no exception.

First learn love and then show the loved ones, life will be amazingly beautiful.

Good Luck.

I use to get spanked, but I am not going to be like that with my kids. I mean I think times and parenting are different. Plus I know that I have been exposed to an entirely different world, compared to what my parents lived. It's not the same.

I think a spanking is perfectly reasonable, but not to the point of leaving welts on the kid's ***. I think that the kids today are so absolutely horrible because everyone has this thing against spankings anymore. They get yelled at and continue on in their evil little ways.

Well, my mother always did that to me when i was younger and i learned my lesson. But i think they shouldn't whip them, more like a verbal wacking.

Violence breeds violence. Even if this discipline does appear to be working, it is out of fear, not out of lessons learned, or respect for the parent. I do not agree with this sort of punishment. At all. Especially for such trivial infractions.
