Stay as far away from Norfolk as you can. Its not called the armpit of the Navy for nothing. Way too many people, way too much crime.

I was in the Hampton Roads area in the Navy from 1998-2005. Stationed at Norfolk when I first got there then for the rest of my time at NAB Little Creek about 5 miles down the road from Norfolk Naval Station (generally referred to as NOB) The stories about mistreatment of sailors stem from the old days. Once long ago that was true but then a wise man called CINCLANT (Commander In Chief Atlantic) The Commander of the US Navy 2nd fleet (all forces between the Mississippi River and the Straits of Gibraltar) said "fleet, go to sea, come home when I say". After most of the area shriveled and died the mayors of the five cities that make up the Hampton Roads area said they understand and the fleet came home. This of coarse was decades ago. there has not been any problems since other than the normal you find in any town outside a main gate in any service. We are always going to be disliked in the local area, but that is different than being mistreated. As long as the civilians outside the gate know where their money come from they will not be truly hostile. I am now back in the Army (that is where I started my career) and Norfolk was much more military friendly then the area around Ft. Hood. Good grief these people act like we are the devil. My wife worked at a restaurant until the manager and partial owner started complaining about how we are paid to much and have to many benefits, have to much time off and he is sick of being asked if he gives military discounts because he has the big yellow sign in the window "we support our troops". Around here that is an advertising slogan not an action or even a belief. To sum it up, I would love to move back to the Norfolk area. By the way the Norfolk area is actually home to many bases and you may not be stuck at NOB. There is also NAS Oceana, NAB Little Creek, Dam Neck Annex, Norfolk Naval Shipyard (not to be confused with Norfolk Naval Station), Northwest Annex, Yorktown Weapons Station, St. Julian's Creek. The area is actually five connected cities (any where else in the country they would be Burroughs of a single city) known collectively as Hampton Roads. I lived in Virginia Beach, about 17 miles from NOB, about 12 from Little Creek and maybe 2 from NAS Oceana and Dam Neck. It is also a growing area with industry outside of the average military supported business and contractors so if you get out there are plenty of opportunities for work as well as work opportunities for spouses. I have never been stationed in San Diego but I have passed through a few times. Did not like it mu, but my brother in law is out there and they love it. Which ever you choose it is all what you make of your tour.

Lived At Norfolk in the 70-80s, married and lived in Ocean View. Loved the base, our squadron was near the back gates. I'm sure all the gates have changed, but hey, it's Navy. What's the point? The Navy sends you where they need you, right? The Sailors and dogs keep off the grass signs were nearly all gone when we were there!

I've never actually been to Norfolk, but I was in Maryland for 3 years and heard many terrible stories. The surrounding neighborhood is *very* unfriendly to the military. Storied like, people walking out the back gate... and in full view of the gate guards getting beaten and raped... the guards not "authorized" to take action, but really standing back because they're afraid they'll be next if they try to help... Signs on peoples lawns "Dogs and Sailors stay off the grass".
San Diego I've been to... and it was wonderful! Hot, and expensive, but very friendly!!

I work here at Naval Base,San Diego and never had that feeling of the base being huge. Once you learn to navigate around the area it won't seem so huge to you. I love the base and the people I work with.

SAN DAWG Hands down.
better weather, more laid back, farther away from DC and the political crap. the locals actually don't mind the military being there, unlike Norfolk/Oceana.
