That's a very good question.
We are supposed to have separation of church and state, yet religion infects the government in many levels.
Marriage is really a legal contract between two consenting adults, but the "church" has pushed its agenda into our government.
Personally, I think we should do away with marriage altogether and make everyone who wants to "get married" have a legally binding secular ceremony (for who ever, or how ever many), then if they choose they can have it "blessed" by their house of worship.
But the church shouldn't have ANY say in who can or cannot get married.

A theocracy is a government that is directly controled by a religious orgaization, where a secular government is controled by other political means. A government is not necessarily one or the other--various combinations are possible.
Iran is a good example of this. The supreme leader is an ayatollah, literally a sign of God, but the president and representatives are elected officials.
Nor is a fully secular government necessarily free of religious influence--in fact this is rarely the case. Here in the US, the religious beliefs of the Founders and the electorate have a powerfull effect on the Constitution and the laws.

You don't have to belong to a theocracy to be ruled by 'the Christian Right' which are mostly Republican. They try to tell you that this is a Christian country without looking at all the non christians in their country and that much of the land was stolen from pagans and the founding fathers weren't all christians.
People say we came here for religious freedom but that didn't apply to everyone that came after the first ones got here. If there was a theocracy here in america, why has there always been so much prejudice and war? Which side was God on during the Civil War? I believe he's on all our side no matter what beliefs we hold self-evident.

It isn't a truly secular government yet because people keep foisting their beliefs into their politics. If it is secular, it's not going to recongnize any religious laws.
You dont have to also follow a Christian model of marriage.
I'm having a Pagan wedding for instance. Justice for the Peace will marry you any way you like.

A truly secular government doesn't care about Islamic laws, that's why it's called SECULAR.
PS. The Christian model is a universal model, I am Christian and support same sex marriage but not multiple marriage, marriage is between two people and two people only.

This country was founded upon christian precepts. Islam has not infiltrated the government on the national level as of yet to change it. Just incase you forgot many hundreds of thousands of Americans died to give all citizens here freedom of religion. If you want secular government vote for Democratic candidates. Usually they are for gay rights, socialist agendas, and anti self defense.

While most (if not all) western countries are primarily 'Christian' and base most laws on Judao-Christian ethics, our society is certainly not a theocracy. Theocracy is rule by God, and the Bible makes it perfectly clear that Satan currently rules this world.
It would seem that it hasn't occured to you that many of the laws God has given us through the Bible are for our benefit, whether we agree with them or not. Popular opinion doesn't make something right or wrong.

I agree there are multiple marriages in the Bible but it was not suppose to be that way. If you notice these multiply marriages did not take place until Adam and Eve sinned. GOD mad woman for man to be a helper and multiply you can not do that with same sex marriage Leviticus18:22.

God created the sacrament of marriage, not the government. Government only got involved so they could make money off of it.. If you have a problem with the laws and sacraments that God made, take it up with Him
