I got pulled over for the first time today (Fresno County, Cali).
I was clocked at 74 on a 65mph country freeway, which I could hardly believe I got a ticket for in the first place. I'm a good driver and I have no previous violations.

I know I shouldn't have been speeding at all, but how much can I expect to pay for 9 mph over (clear weather, no traffic)?
Can I take traffic school to clear my record?

I don't know much about this stuff (I'm only 18); I tried looking it up, but the penal code was difficult to understand. Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.

You're in luck. This is an easy one to answer. You actually have two choices: Pay the fine, or Don't pay the fine. If you don't pay the fine, you'll end up getting stopped one day and finding yourself under arrest for Failure To Appear, and the cost will be even higher, but still, it's an option. (There is a slight possibility that you'll never get caught.) Or you can do what the guy suggested earlier, about going to court and requesting a driver safety class. From what I've seen, those cost nearly the same as the ticket, in class fees, required materials, and court fees, but upon successful completion, it still eliminates the fine and the points, which is what drives up your insurance costs. Don't speed again, whatever excuses you have, because you can only use that option once every 12 - 18 months, depending upon the state rules.

The age-old rule of thumb on speeding tickets is $10 per MPH over the limit. That would be $90. Depending upon the jurisdiction, add 50% - 100% for various fees, court costs, and sur-fines. So in most locales you're looking at $135 - $180 for 9 MPH over the limit.

9 miles over the speed limit is speeding girl, and if you think at 18 years of age you have enough experience behind the wheel of a car traveling at 74 miles an hour, I can assure you that you do not. You might have to get off your butt and go to pay the fine before you find out what it'll cost.

You know there are people driving the speed limit that have babies in their cars, right? Husbands, wives, mom & dads, even grandma's and grandpa's are sharing the road with you. You are not immortal and you should be more careful with other people's lives. You're not driving on a deserted road, you know.

Just wait until your insurance goes through the roof.

You're going to have to call the police department that issued the ticked. When I got mine in 2002 for 10 over, it was $90, but this was in Michigan. It would have been 2 points on my licence, but I fought it because it was a bogus ticket.
