Confront the one who lied. Befriending those you work with can make or break the job you have. Confront her and possibly when the person being talked about is present so she over hears. Tell her that you both know its bull crap and that you dont appreciate it and feel you and the other girl both deserve an apology. I understand that may cause hurt feelings with our so called gossiper, but then again that is not really the type of person you want as your friends is it. Eventually this person will either change her ways or leave. We all do it at times and it sucks but the person who did the talking needs to step up. Take a stand at her and be strong!

Firstly, you should be chastised for listening to the rumors in the first place. Rumor mongers who have noone to tell their rumors, soon lose their interest in telling the stories themselves. Just say something like "I'm sorry, but I don't do rumors".
Nextly:
Confront her publicly. What she has done has belittled you in pretty much every possible way. You need to get that part of yourself back. There is a difference between being meek and being weak. Do not confuse the two, as your coworker has obviously done. She thinks that because you said nothing, you are weak, whereas you were just trying to be meek. It does not mean that you are the bad guy for confronting her, but the repercussions of your NOT confronting her could last a very long time, and be VERY negative to you personally and professionally. There IS a time to fight battles, I assure you, for everyone, you just have to choose those battles wisely. What was the first piece of advice I ever got?
"Never start a fight, but always finish it!"
I never knew what that meant till I got older and realized that I could be meek without being weak. It was when I realized that sometimes you have to fight, or lose your own self respect and dignity...
Hope this helps...

Tell your trusty co workers it's not true. If you did anything honest to the others, then remind them of that time. After that, say Do I ever lie to you? Why would I say that stuff? Just trust me, that woman is lying. Or just talk to that lady and ask her why she didn't tell the truth. Keep on annoying her till the truth comes out. Or gang up against her with loyal friends.

I think you should nip this in the butt right off the bat. Clear the air so that this situation doesn't become like dog bite. Tell your co-worker that you are disappointed in her spreading lies about what was said, and showing the lack of respect for them. Tell her in the future keep her stories to herself you are not interested.

There's nothing you can do to correct this situation. Lies are like a handful of dust - they spread and scatter beyond recalling. But the next time she starts to gossip, simply tell her you're busy, you're not interested, you don't want to hear it.

Try to straighten things out, gossip is also lying because what ever you hear is not true.
