Can anyone suggest a good book on genetics in dogs I am wondering if I will get any Parti pups from my Parti male toy poodle when bred to a Phantom, I havent received their pedigree papers yet so haven't been able to check to see if she is a parti gene carrier. Thankyou

There are plenty of good books on genetics - GENETICS, AN INTRODUCTION FOR DOG BREEDERS by Jackie Isabell is a good one to start with. I have to say though that if you don't know the pedigrees of the sire and the dam going back at least 3 generations no book help you. You could have some DNA tests done by vetgen to get an idea, but as yet there are only a certain number of tests available, you won't get a complete picture. This method is extremely costly too (not to mention time consuming in waiting for the results). Whilst you are thinking about colours etc., please pause and think about health testing too. Get those eyes checked out for PRA at least. And check to make sure both the sire and dam are from healthy lines with no history of health problems.

Good luck.

You should talk to your vet, there is a lab (in texas I belive) that does genetic testing for color carrier markers, this makes it a little easier for breeding for color, but don't forget to watch out for heart disease, dental malformaties and stifle problems in poodles. If you breed just for color you may end up with a physical issue to be concerned about.

If you would like to know about this test I can find the information from my vet, email me wildbane666@yahoo.ca

the parti gene is rare in poodles since its not acceptable to AKC - I wouldn't hold my breath....

PS I'm speachless you'd make a mating in which you don't even HAVE the pedigree of one of the dogs
