There still does seem to be some sort of stigma against online dating, but I don't believe it pertains as much to the act of doing it as it does to admitting your participation to others.
Most of the people I know have participated in, are attempting to set up, or are currently involved in some facet of online dating. Still though, they hide their part in it as though it is somehow less acceptable. I'm not exactly sure why you would hide the fact that you do something that those you are talking do as well, but such is their way I suppose. Seems at times that the only people that talk with pride about their online dating rituals are the guys who proclaim their many sexual encounters with "these hot chicks from myspace". Too bad lies about cyberspace still sound like lies in person.
It's fairly safe to say that the idea that "predators" are waiting on the other end of every conversation has been thrown out the window by most computer literate people though (Sans underage MSNBC specials of course). While afraid to admit it, it seems most guys and girls aren't afraid to go just about anywhere to meet someone they have known online for as little as weeks or even days. When something like this happens, everyone blames the internet and online dating when foolish acts would have poor results no matter how they were setup. I wouldn't say it sets it back or creates more stigmas, but it does tend to leave a bitter taste in the mouths of those less informed.
Slowly...very slowly it seems...you find people here and there that have begun to embrace it. They are throwing away the adages that "you can't get a real feel for a person through a screen" or "only weirdos and creeps would date someone they haven't met", and admitting their involvement. With people marrying their online sweethearts and adults using sites as alternatives to smoky bars or expensive dates that lead nowhere, it just might lose the stigma about it being completely unsafe or foolish.

the stigma towards online dating vary from case to case. its hard to tell when the person you are talking to online is harmless. in my case i actually took the chance in meeting this guy. he came to my hometown and to my house. my best friend was calling and texting me about every 5 minutes to make sure i was okay and to know where i was at and of course i answered everytime she called and texted. As it turned out we had a friend in common. im not telling you to go for it just because of the outcome i got when i did but do be extreamly careful when doing the whole online dating deal. its a greater risk than dating someone you already know.

Well, 8 years ago I got online just to meet guys to go out with for fun things to do, not marriage. I wrote 10 of them, 7 answered back, and 3 I went out with. Eventually I settled on one I really liked and a year later we married.
On-line is just a way to find people you would never have been able to meet otherwise.

I consider you. specific, there are weirdos on line, yet then there are human beings such as you and me who only choose for to fulfill human beings. this is confusing to fulfill human beings, extraordinarily once you're out of faculty and are not assembly new human beings truthfully. as properly, who's to declare the guy eyeing you on the bar isn't a serial killer? i think of the stigma against on line relationship is diminishing, this is solid because of the fact it somewhat is a gaggle of crap. Bully for the persons who can meet those with out having to apply the internet.

With technology now you can see, hear, and speak with someone over the internet. You can really get to know someone. No longer are we relegated to love within our local geographies. More than half of all marriages end in divorce. I'd say internet relationships couldn't do worse! http://www.thestl.com
