This car is for her but she since she has bankrupcy on her record, I have to co-sign for her and be the primary buyer. The bank was willing to let her name be secondary since I have a good fico score. Can I take my name off the loan after a short period to have her as the only name on the loan? I think it's always better to have only one name on the contract, since you never know what will happen.

No, your lender will not allow that to happen. Your girlfriend would have to qualify for financing without you, and she has previously been denied. Give it some time for her credit to start to repair itself. Once she is able to refinance, then certainly do that if that's what is important to you.

You probably could if her score increases..but the what might happen isn't specific. If you're worried about a breakup then you should ahve thought about that in the 1st place...if a death then you could have the registration be in both your names instead of registring it "and" you use "or" so either one of you have control of the vehicle without the hassle of having two signatures to sell it if the time comes.

Either way what if she dies? then who takes the car? For the best and worst of times you already commited the primary SIN co signed for some one. Don't do it unless your married.
