I have never installed xp as a clean install, only 98. Its for a friend, the one I have asked SO many questions for and I am going to attempt to help her on the phone with it. What my question is, she has 98 with a messed up config.sys file right now and it won't boot up except for safe mode. I am hoping she can install this xp anyway, without having to reformat first. Also, please don't neglect this question: I've been told if you have 98 its best to do the upgrade, but she'd like full xp so please tell me if that can be done simply by popping in the cd and following the commands to do a full install.

My opinion is that the best installation is the "clean" one.
Follow these steps for beginning a clean installation of Windows XP using the cd.
1. Save all your necessary data (documents ect.) in CDs, DVDs or a Portable Hard Disk. Do this because clean install comes with a quick format and everything from disk C:\ will be erased.
2. When the PC starts check if there is an option "Press any key to boot from CD". If not, restart the computer, and press "Del" to enter BIOS setup. Search an option that says about Disk priorities and select CD-ROM as the first boot device and tour Hard Disk as second.
3. Insert the Windows XP CD and when the option "Press any key to boot from CD" appears press a key to start installation from the CD.
4. Wait while the CD reads some necessary driver information.
5. Follow the steps of the installation. It is as easy as a Windows installation.

The difference between the upgrade version and the full version is simply that the Upgrade version requires you to own a previous version of windows.
You can still do a fresh, clean install of XP with the Upgrade disk.
But, I will say that if she has windows 98 on the computer right now, it will probably run a HECK of a lot slower with XP installed on it.
You would be better off buying a copy of Windows 2000 professional (NOT windows millennium) and installing that.
It is essentially the same as XP, but is missing some of the flashy stuff. Plus it uses a fraction of the system resources.

Hi yes, XP is bootable (it carries it's own boot-up files) - it should ask if she wants to upgrade or clean install. If you're going from 98 to XP you may as well clean install and get rid of 98 - just make sure she's gone in in safe mode and saved any files that she wants on disc to transfer back after the installation.
cheers

If shes not careful, she could lose all her data on 98, upgrade to XP from 98 is not a bad idea, as almost all system files are replaced, but you do need a Retail or upgrade version to do this.

If she has files she wants to keep she needs to back them up or save what she can onto flash drives. The XP disk will do the work, just pop it in at start up and it tells you step by step what to do. She will want to copy over and delete the current win98 os and start fresh with the copy of XP and it will guide her as to how this is done once the disk starts running. If the XP disk dont automatically start once the pc starts up at the BIOS screen (just before startup) hit F10 and you will get the command prompt top choose to start from Cd-Rom etc. But it should autostart telling you to puch any key to load current disk or something like that.
Hope this helps.

I would format and do the clean install.98 was notoriously unstable so you should use a clean install just to be safe especially if 98 is all ready corrupted.

nicely attempt first real clicking the interest executables and going to between the tabs you are able to substitute a placing to run below domicile windows XP and it would artwork in any different case, get a linux stay cd (loose) and use it to format your no longer elementary force then put in your xp disc. or you are going to be waiting to start the cd upon boot (via pressing F8 i think of) and use the comand line to place format C: and it would artwork. Its so basic as formatting the C force and then doing a sparkling installation of XP yet while its a duplicate then you certainly would get some issues from MS. additionally attempt putting your domicile windows xp disc then pressing F8 and opt to run the disc, this could artwork and eliminate Vista yet while no longer then attempt the linux stay cd and formatting the force. in case you prefer from now on documents or help touch me with the aid of my profile.

Yes she can just pop in the cd reboot the cpu and follow the install instructions......I would recommend doing the format otherwise her system will have 2 operating systems which will eat alot of space and can cause possible conflicts (rare but it does happen)
