For Christians and atheists to respect each others views?

I am an atheist because I have found that I am happiest when I place my faith in myself over anything else, but I still respect the views of those that believe in god...

Christine P : I will not deny that to a certain extent I believe that a higher power, whatever it may be has brought me to my decision to place my faith inward. - But this is not a question about my own faith!

The problem is an unwillingness to accept that people are different, and what works for one may not work for another. Many people take great comfort in the idea that their viewpoint is the right one, and all others are at least mistaken, if not evil. It's as if they cannot justify hanging onto what they believe if they acknowledge a valid alternative.

I had that problem when I left the Catholic church, which was made necessary as part of leaving my Catholic husband who was abusive. Once I accepted that no valid interpretation of God would want me to simply stay and take being beaten up, I had to make the choice to say that being a Catholic is not the only way. If it's not the only way, then it was not for me, because it was a very hard way. It took time; it was painful. But it was necessary to my self-respect, and just possibly to my survival.

Thank you L-foc for your kind words, and I as a Christian respect your decision to be an atheist. We must all find our own way in life and what makes us happy. Mutual respect would go a long way to bridging the gap between atheists and Christians.

Well, I can say that there are some (probably the 15 year olds) who are always rude.
Funny, you can tell those ones, even their questions don't sound as if they know anything.
One questions was: could God defecate in my mouth?
Another: how big is God's penis (only that wasn't the word he used) I'll like it in my butt.
Tell me, do this sound respectful to you?
It doesn't to me.
But, like I said, it's from a group of uneducated 15 year olds, thinking they are being cool.

I can respect a person.
I can reespect everyone's right to believe how they want.
I cannot respect an idea that is just silly.

I try hard not to be rude and make my point based on ideas, not personal attacks.

I am happy as a Christian. I respect your right to choose. I however do not respect someone pulling another into Hell.
I trust what God gave me. I trust myself to do the human part, and God to do the Divine part. I'm glad God made me capable

It isn't fair that we do seem to hate eachother... But there is hope... I have had quite a few Christians leave me some sweet answers... but I have had just as many hell ones... so I think it just is how everyone is... they love conflict... and so do we atheists... it wouldn't be the same on YahooAnswer R&S... without our little conflict... good times on R&S...

because most athiests believe that there is no God and that people are wasting there time believeing in Him. Christians believe that there is a God and that the only way to be saved is through Jesus Christ. If you are not saved, you go to hell. Christians dont want people to go to hell so they tell others of their beliefs. Athiests are telling people that there is no God and are basically sending people to hell....so yeah thats about it

that is very nice of you to do that. just let your own witness in that concept show others that aetheists are nice people too. but ur dependance on urself reminds me of the people who built the tower of babel to save themselves from another flood. they did not finish..so I hope that some day you will learn that everyone needs help... the Beatles wrote a song about you.. it is called Help!! I need sombody!

Frankly, I find religious views to be destructive and a threat to my well being. I don't expect to be burned at the state for being an atheist, but our legislators seem very keen on legislating bible-brand morality (gay rights, abortion), and having my rights taken away, even if they are rights I will likely never practice, puts me on the offensive.

Respect is earned.

Hard to earn respect when people go around bashing each other based on their beliefs.

You didn't bash anybody here. +2 experience points.
