I just bought a Sony DCR-DVD108 DVD Handycam Camcorder with 40x Optical Zoom for $300 or $400 and it was worth every penny. Really easy to use, and great features. It also seems to be well-liked by just about everybody who buys it with 4.5 of 5 stars based on 32 reviews at Amazon (link below).

The only downside is that you can't record more than 30 minutes on the DVD-RW mini discs in normal resolution.

DO NOT GET A DVD, HARD DRIVE, OR HD CAMERA! People will tell you that these are good cameras, but they are not. Nothing good comes from them. Get a Mini DV camera. I recommend the Panasonic PV-GS320, it cost about $500.00 or less and has 3 CCD's. Top of the line camera, for a great price.
