It helps. All of the big literary agents and big publishing houses are in Manhattan. So a writer would have an advantage by being in NYC. It is, nevertheless, all about talent, luck, and connections. The more talent of course the less luck and connections come into play.

Nope. Look at JK Rawling...the woman who wrote the Harry Potter books. She's British, lives in Great Britain.

Most authors live where ever they choose but either have a good agent or are terribly savvy with the way they market themselves. Besides, how could a starting writer afford to live in NYC? Even if you do hold down three jobs bussing and waiting tables, living on tips to do it?!

Absolutely not!! One of my favorite authors lives in Natchez, Mississippi and another in Sarasota, Florida. James Patterson lives in Palm Beach County, Florida and he has a major list of best sellers. So I think the main factor in being a successful author is having the ability to write "readable" material that is of interest to a wide segment of the general population.

Have a great day!!

why would you ask that? You can write from anywhere. You may just meet more contacts in New York Vs a smaller town or city. Now a days you can publish anything from anywhere. Do an internet search on how to publish.

No. With technology these days, all you have to do is be able to write and contact the publishers.

You do not need to be physically close to the publishers in order to conduct this kind of business.
