Tebone is right. At Pentecost the Jews who were present, who spoke many languages, suddenly found they understood one another. It's written in the Bible in plain and simple language. That's what speaking in tongues means.

That isn't what happens in churches today. Instead people talk nonsense words and say they're getting a gift just like the Bible said they would. Well no, that's just wishful thinking caused by desperation for spiritual confirmation.

When's the last time you saw someone in church turn round and speak to someone else in a language they previously didn't understand? With flames over their head? Cos that's what happened in the Bible.

Speaking in tongues is good if a member of your worship group has the talent of interpretting tongues. Otherwise, there is little point. The Holy Spirit already translates our prayers.

If you are praying in a prayer language, it should be in private and is a direct communication with God via the Holy Spirit.

If you do it in public there should be someone who can interpret what you have said through the gift of the Holy Spirit for the edification of those present.

Paul discouraged public praying in the prayer language because it was/is confusing and scary for those outside the church and it is not orderly as worship should be. Not stoggy but not chaotic

You cannot just say " Hey! I think i want to speak in tongues!!" Speaking in tongues is an act of God, it is the Holy Spirit coming through you and pretty much makes you speak in different languages. You talk in a language that you can understand, but each person hears it in their own language.

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

Acts 2:4,6

This passage tells us what tongues were. Tongues were languages. The following verses go on to list numerous groups whose languages were being spoken.

Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues [languages] the wonderful works of God.

Acts 2: 9-11

The word tongue, means language.

Speaking in tongue is speaking another language. He gave this gift was so the apostles could go spread the word to other people in other countries, in their own language. God doesn't give stupid gifts, like blabbering gibberish.

Speaking in tongues is a spiritual gift. It is the least of the gifts. Praying in tongues is self edifying jibber jabber.

I believe that speaking in tongues is the Holy spirit praying to God through us.

We are talking to God in a spiritual language...oh and the devil doesn't know what we're saying!! But other Christians can interpret the message. It's a wonderful gift. :-)

God makes intercession, He's able to understand the tongue, remember he gave it to you.
