That is true, it doesn't. Puritanism has a problem with it, but the one ceremony accepted by all Christian groups (communion) involves drinking wine, plus Jesus turned water into alcoholic wine, not vice versa.

Prov 31:4 says it's not good for a king to drink wine (by the way, this was the saying of the mother of a king : ) ). I guess in a sense Christians are called to be leaders of some sort (salt and light of the earth)

Looking at other wisdom literature in the Bible, notably the rest of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes, I get the impression that drinking and eating TOO MUCH is the characteristic feature of a fool.

So, excess is not recommended because it is not good to waste your life being under the influence when you could be a positive influencer, even a world changer.

Ryan,
Anything that is done in excess and is harmful to the body is considered a sin. If you are able to have a social drink or too and not become addicted or cause another person to stumble in their Christian walk there is nothing sinful about that. My brother is a recovering alcoholic, I do not serve alcohol at dinners or events that take place at my home or that I am sponsoring if he is present. I do that out of respect for his attempts to break a very addictive habit. If he is not present or won't be attending an event like a craw fish boil or a BBQ then there will be beer and wine present. I think that so many "people" have tried to decipher exactly what the bible says that it has gotten way out of hand. Do what your conscience leads you to do and if you are a christian then Christian decisions are the ones that you will make.

Nowhere in the Bible does it say that drinking is a sin. Jesus drank wine, so obviously it is not a sin. But what it says is that you should drink alcohol in moderation. Not being drunk is what it says is a sin.

No not necessarily, only getting drunk is, God turned water into wine, if he said it was a sin to drink alchahol why would he make it :P So drink moderately, and follow the laws, just because the bible says you can drink doesnt mean you always can. Follow rules that have been set before you.

Since the Bible talks about using wine in a sacrament and there are blessings for wine, it clearly is not a sin to drink alcohol.

No, in fact wine was a very common beverage in biblical times. The water wasn't always clean enough to drink, but the alcohol tends to make it more palatable. However, I think most wine was a good bit weaker than modern wines, and certainly distilled liquors were not common, if they existed at all.

But there are some negative consequences of drunkenness mentioned, including incest.

No, it says do not be drunk with wine, but be filled with the Spirit of God.

I made a decision not to drink alcohol tho as I could be a stumbling block to someone else.
I work for a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, and see first hand the devastation which they can bring.

scripture does not necessarily forbid a christian from drinking beer, wine, or any other drink containing alcohol. what God commands christians regarding alcohol is to avoid drunkenness [see ephesians 5:18 or Proverbs 23:29-35]. the bible condemns drunkenness and its effects

consumption of small quantities of alcohol is a matter of christian freedom. drunkenness and addiction are sin

Whether it says it or not, it's the behaivier that makes you a sinner.
You sin because your behaivier is against another persons will.
Or against the laws of the bible.
To blame drinking of your sins is to say you are unable to control you behaivier because of alcohol effect.

Well, Jesus turned water into wine, and Jesus never sinned, right?
Anyways, 2000 years ago water was usually too dirty to drink anyways, that's why most people drank alcohol. It was germ free. If Christians couldn't drink alcohol back then they might have all died.
