I watched the Gordon crash from this past weekend for the first time and I have to say Gordon really messed up bad... I've seen a bunch of guys (including Gordon) make saves with cars much farther out of control than he was... I guess at 160 mph's any mistake is disastrous, but I would have thought a veteran like Gordon would have made the save there...

DrivinFast31, read the question next time... i said do you THINK jeff gordon messed up, not is jeff gordon messed up... geez...
I also never said he was or is expected to be perfect all the time, just that I would have normally expected him to save it in that situation...

Yep just as I thought, the Gordon faithful are all bent out of shape at the slightest mentioning that the Wonder Boy could have made a mistake...

shame you are getting beat up on this one...he did mess up, that is not picking on him, it is stating a fact, he did what most other drivers do( oops) surprised he didnt straighten it out, but then again the cars and the responses to them varies from spin tp spin...

It's always hard to tell who's at fault and exactly how these things happen sometimes. When they interview drivers after a wreck they can't tell you who caused what most of the time. The blanket excuse "just one of them racin' deals" gets used way too often but it is the truth. I think that was the case with Gordon. Raines started a chain reaction that is hard to go back and say what Gordon should have done differently. At the speeds they are going it's just reactions without thought. Sometimes you choose right and sometimes you get wrecked. It's easy to sit in the easy chair and say so and so should have done this instead of that but you will never know the outcome if they had done things differently. The other thought I have is even if a driver does everything perfect it won't matter if another driver reacts wrong and plows into you anyway.

I just watched the clip. Let me go ahead and say that I am a Gordon fan and yes I expected him to save that before I watched the clip. But now, I don't really think he could have. Go to about 2:15 on your clip: Gordon starts to turn down into the grass to try to avoid Raines. Then he starts to correct himself as he is hit. He is already making a right turn when he is in the grass, and we all know they have VERY limited control in the grass. I'm not saying he couldn't have saved it or shouldn't have, it just looks like he had already made the turn to the right when he hit the grass and it was just all over from that point on. Ohh, and I understood your question also. lol

What do you mean, is Jeff Gordon messed up? He's not perfect. The best drivers in NASCAR aren't gonna have a perfect year, being crash free and no problems out on the track or pit. Yeah, maybe had he not gone into the grass he could have saved it. In the Busch race in Talladega when Kyle Busch was upside down, as soon as his car hit the grass it rolled 7 times. I was there, seen that wreck. Personally, I like it when Hendrick drivers wreck, the harder the better. Jimmie Johnson fixing to get his, wait and see. But no driver is NASCAR is gonna be perfect every race all season, not even the veterans. At some point, bad luck comes to visit. Go #31 Jeff Burton by the way.
Ok, well whatever. I'm entitled to opinion and I said it so there!!!

He was in the grass and 160 is not slow. Sometimes when you get off the track the unexpected happens. No driver is perfect. Gordon rarely makes mistakes on the tracks and his wreck Sunday was circumstance. He is still the points leader by a lot.

Did he mess up..? Maybe but he is a person and people are not perfect. Maybe it was saved in the grass wheels turned one way but then he hit the track and it turned another way. We will never know if he did make a mistake so we just move on and watch him save it next time (hopefully).

No he didnt mess up. I mean other cars were saved but it was still daytime and the track was hot and slick and they were using a harder tire so when he got hit by Tony Raines, he went down into the grass and he slid up the racetrack because the grass took all the rubber off his tires basically and the car was swirving then and he got back up onto the track and hit the wall and then Allmendinger slammed into him. I think that he tried to save it the best he could but I think he wouldnt have finished 41st had Allmendinger not slammed into the side of his car and then sent him airbourne. It looked pretty hard but he said it wasnt so all the safety features are helping alot.

I watched it several times as well and the 96 went across the entire width of the track and nailed Gordon's car real hard. I am sorry, but you get hit that hard at that speed there is absolutely nothing you can do but hang on to your shoulder straps and wait for the ride to end.
Apperences are deceiving when it comes to wrecks. I have seen wrecks that I thought for sure everything was alright and everything turned out all wrong; and other wrecks where I thought the worst happened and the Driver was able to carry on and even win.

Nope, I don't think Jeff messed up.. I think it's just hard to control a car when it's going that fast and someone hits you. Sometimes even the littlest of taps can send a car flying. I think several driver's WERE messing up Sunday though. I think they thought they signed up for a demo derby.

I'm not too sure about him being able to save the car really. I mean, it looked like the #96 got loose and hit Jeff which caused the #24 to skate across the grass. Considering that the track was slick with the sun, then chuck in the debris on the tyres from the grass and I think everyone would struggle to save it from that position.

He could not have saved it. Heck, I used to spin out on lawns going 15 mph when I would give someone a turf job back in the day. Now when Your going 160mph. It's all luck. He had it going straight and then the tires lost traction and sent him into the wall
