Personally I like red, black and white so no argument from me. I'd have to see your room and the stripe width and placement, but sounds interesting. I put a red stripe around our walls in the 70's and loved it. Go for it?
What about window coverings? Maybe something unusual in black and white? You could use the fabric to make a few pillows or something for the room. The colors are great, but I think you need a bit of pattern......somewhere.

If your room is small DONT paint it red thats for large high rooms also its an energy colour creams and pale greens are relaxing , but its all down to taste in the end so go for your best feeling try one wall at a time.

If your walls are lightly textured and if you want something cozy you could try a dark red (not bright) and then a silver color brushed lightly over the red just where it basically paints the texture and not the wall. Then you have a nice solid color wall that is warm and inviting at the same time.

i would stay away from red its an agressive color and you want your room to be relaxing and a place you can rest

I like your idea - then add some red or cream accents or a print of both in chair, curtains, rug, lamps, candles, desk or dresser accessories.
I think it sounds great, and it is your room!

i will suggest you paint it white because it is brighter and considering the black stuff's you have it will make it more visible.
