I want to get a nice gift for my girlfriend for her birthday. Do you think hermit crabs would be a good idea? She likes animals but she already has a dog so I couldn't get her that.
What else could I get her? I have about 40 bucks and I want your opinions!

Hermit crabs are stupid and boring. Get her a little bunny, hampster or guinea pig. They are all more active than a hermit crab and those are actually cute and cuddly. =] I've had all those pets including hermit crabs and my favorite is a bunny or hampster. I used to have a dwarf mouse too, those are cute and only cost 5 dollars, but I'm not sure if she would like a mouse.

Well, maybe your girlfriend has different taste than me. Personally, if my boyfriend were to give me hermit crabs for my birthday I'd act like I like the present, but then go home and cry because well, it's not such a great gift. If she's girly, buy her a pretty necklace! It doesn't have to be real diamonds! Just go to Claire's and tell the person working that you'd like to pick out something for your girlfriend and could use some help. Claire's is VERY inexpensive! Or, you could always go to Bath & Body Works and get her a sweet smelling basket of perfume, lotion, and soaps! Also inexpensive. Good luck!

A hermit crab is a great idea actually. I've had a few hermit crabs. They aren't crazy expensive to buy OR to take care of. They can be entertaining at times too.

take her out for a dinner I dont know of a girl that likes hermit crabs plus if you only have like 40 then how can u pay for its food cage and all that other stuff it needs?? or get her dog a huge bone or somthing I dont know

Most girls don't like crabs. Or spiders (in case that was your next thought), or lizards.
Maybe a stuffed toy dog that looks like the one that she has now would be better.

hermit crabs wouldn't be the best gift, but it means you know her. i think she'd appriciate it more than all the other gifts in the world. go for it.

Unless she asked for them - NO. If she likes animals give her like a cute jacket with puppies or kittens on it. And like take her and her dog to a park on her birthday.

Sure why not? Get her one that has a design on the shell, you could put it in a small fish tank with sand or aqarium gravel, etc. so it has more room to move around...

You could get her a hamster or if she likes cats a kitten. I would ask her mom or dad if she would like that.
