My 12 year old daughter got head lice from school before summer break (for the first time) I don't know much about it. I treated her with RID as soon as we realized she had lice and followed through with the 7 day treatment. The problem is that I keep finding these nits (eggs) and I just can't seem to get rid of them. I put mayonaise on her head and wrapped it in plastic wrap and she sat for 2 hours. The last time that I looked at her head I found about 6 nits and nothing living that would lay eggs. If anyone has used a non-toxic home remedy please let me know I am open to anything I just want them gone. I have washed and washed clothes, sheets ect. I also have bagged all stuffed animals and they are out of the house.

Relax...the nits are all dead if you used RID and the 7-day treatment. They just have to be combed out. Just use the comb that comes with the RID kit. You will have to comb everyone out. Make sure that your daughter know that this happend to most children and that it is not het fault. Good luck.

Jennifer, Here is what we used when the store stuff failed and the whole mayo thing was also a disaster. We checked for some natural products on the internet and also tried to find the best nit comb that we could since we knew we needed to get rid of all of the nits and the live lice. We ended up with some product from a company called NitFree that were chemical free (important to us) and this could work for you as the lice strain you have may be chemical resistent. They have a mousse that helps to kill the lice and dissolve the glue that is holding the nits to the hair and they also have a great comb. You will likely need two bottles of the mousse, one comb, maybe Neon Nits to find the last few nits, and we are using the Mint Spray to ward off any further infestations. And, of course, you have lots of laundry to do...and the stuffed animals etc need to go in the dryer. I will give you a link to their Canadian site and also their US and International one as I do not know where you are. You can ask them questions about the products if you want as they are the experts but I can vouch for them in our situation. Good luck Susie

OMG I feel for you! As an adult I acquired head lice from a beauty school. Forget all the home remedies and bite the bullet on the money issue because it's expensive and go out and get the pediculocide (sp?)(lice shampoo) brand called Nix. The box states (or it did a few years ago when this happened to me) that less than 1% of users have to re-apply. Boil your brushes and combs and throw in the dryer (on HIGH) everything else that you absolutely don't want to get rid of. Sounds like everything else you're doing is right. BTW this worked for my head that was covered in the tightest curly perm that no lice comb could have EVER gotten through. What I'm saying is that I did not have to comb the eggs out. This stuff killed eggs and all! I hope this helps and Good Luck!

Ah, the joys of lice. What worked best for us was vinegar and oil--any cooking oil, 50/50 split. Douse the head and cover with a shower cap/plastic bag and wait it out. Go to the pharmacy and get a nit comb in metal, not plastic and comb it through. Then go through again.
As for washing everything, it needs to be EVERYTHING. If you can wash it, it needs to be washed in HOT water. Stuffed animals in sealed bags for 2 weeks. Vacuum and use an antibacterial spray on the back of the couch, matress and anything else you can't wash.

The Rid should have taken care of it, did you do just one treatment? sometimes you need to do at least 3, The most important thing to do is make sure you comb her hair with the one that they provided and it will take for ever but it works. if she has long hair or thick hair that could be a problem because it is so easy for you to miss the nits, you may need to have her hair cut, thinned out, or you could take her to your local Health Department and they will help you get rid of them I know when my daughter had them this is what I had to do and I made sure they also checked my hair, These people were very helpful and they got rid of them. You could also call the pharmacy and ask the pharmacist what other treatment he could recommend. Good Luck I know how you feel!!
