The best way to find out is to visit your local bike shop. Its staff will be happy to "measure" your son to provide the proper bike fit. Be prepared to spend roughly about 30 minutes to an hour doing this; also, give extra time for you to field any questions you may have regarding certain brands of bikes, component recommendations, advice, etc. Being well-informed about everything will provide a better riding experience.
By the way ... stay away from stores such as Wal-Mart, Target, etc. when in the market to purchase a bike. You may be tempted to buy from them due to their low prices, but you will regret it afterwards.

Your looking at adult sizes. If he wants a BMX, then he is into stunt work, or freeride? He probably wants an adult, small frame. Try this site:

There is a frame size guestimator that should be able to calculate his bmx frame size. However, for a mountain bike he is probably 15"

Luck
