Genealogy urban legend # 27..
all persons of a surname come from a common ancestor, and are thus related. False. Thus, there is no "Nolan tree".
Genealogy standard operating procedure #2-
Living persons have the right to privacy, thus it is normal to not post that info online. Your name is your choice, so you made the call on that one.
How to build a RELIABLE family history? One step at a time, and beginning with the present and working back. Do NOT "jump" to the earliest known Nolan in America and try to connect from then to now. Unless, of course, you have thousands of dollars, and tons of free time to waste on something that may not be fact.
You start with your immediate family, and document that. Now you know those are relatives. Next, go to grandparents, do the same (and don't forget you are not just a Nolan, you are 1/2 your mother). Those are relatives. Next the great grandparents. Again.. you are PROVING as you go. No guesswork. Assume that anyone in the last 100 yrs might be alive, and proceed accordingly. Your cousin is much more likely to share the family Bible if you haven't caused him to be target of ID theft.
Stop by rootsweb.com, and take a few minutes to see their guide to beginning research. There are also tons of family files that you can look at (not all accurate), but until you have some known dead relatives, you may not recognize your family.
Tons of people here to help. Keep smiling, you will always get more help that way.
Cheers back-atcha

Wendy gave you a very good answer.

There are websites, Rootsweb,Familysearch.org, Ancestry.Com,Genealogy.com

However, information in family trees submitted on any web site must be taken as clues not as fact. A lot of it is not documented and even if you see the same information over and over by different submitters a lot of copying is being done.

Genealogy tries to protect identify of living people because of identity theft.

I don't know what country you are in. I had a gggggrandfather, Jarret Handley. He was born in South Carolina.

Maybe you're related to Nolan Ryan... he was a great pitcher... you might also be related to Jack Handey...
Kenneth Nolan owes me 125 dollars for letting him eat the mud in my yard... and I "dated" Julie Handley when I was in High School (everyone "dated" her, IF you know what I mean!!!)...

Hope this helped!!!...

Try the Nolan genealogy message board at:

http://genforum.genealogy.com/nolan/

You may find some relatives there who could help you with this.

Good luck,
Dave

Look in FamilySearch.org. I am usually in lds.org to go into this. I don't think you need to be a member.

You will need to research most of the 20th century at home with your elders, learning about their parents and grandparents.
