I have to agree with the idea that most diets are too restricting for most people. I seem to do the best with my own way of eating. I try to stay away from as much of the white potatoes and bread as possible. I always treat myself to at least a taste of something I really like each day so that I do not gorge myself by the absence of it. And last but not least because this has really made a difference to help me lose weight and that is to use a smaller plate and eat less at each meal. I try to stop eating when I first feel satisfied about 50% full. That all works for me. I am Italian so the pasta thing is really hard for me. Switch to whole wheat pasta and take a smaller portion. I hope you do well. Don't starve yourself. That is probably the worst thing you can do. If you can get someone to start a diet when you do that is a really good incentive to lose weight. Don't forget to walk or exercise if you can.

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)
i had been eating like this for the past 2 years already and you really get used to it and dont even have to count calories anymore because my body has gotten used it and knows what its dealing with and that its not gona be starved ever again - me and my body are so much better as a team now:-)

Try a cleansing diet! I did and lost 11 pounds and 21 inches in only 9 days. I was very happy with the results and continued on the program and lost 29 pounds in 5 weeks. This is the fastest I have ever lost with other diets like Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, Medifast, Slimfast etc…. Cleansing works by removing impurities from your body. You get impurities from your food (pesticides, preservatives, food additives, colorings) water, chemicals, pollution, medications, alcohol, hormones that the animals you eat were fed etc….YUCK! The impurites get coated with fat and remain in your body. To remove the fat, you have to remove the impurites. This system worked for me, maybe it can work for you too. You can check out the website or call this toll free number 1-877-587-4647 for more info. The program is not cheap, but it is worth every penny since it works and keeps you motivated. Good luck! All diets work in the same way. If they restrict calories to a point where you are burning more than you eat, you will lose weight. If the diet does this than it will work, if not you will fail. Whether or not a diet is healthy is separate from whether or not it will work. If you severely restrict calories to under 1200 per day, you will lose weight but going this route is very unhealthy so be careful when reading about these diets. Also beware of diets that limit you to one food. Even if you are taking in a good amount of calories, you won't be able to get all the vitamins, nutrients, fat, carbohydrates or protein from just one type of food.

Cheapest diet in the world:

Step 1) Limit your calories and be sure the food you eat is meeting your nutritional needs.

Step 2) Exercise regularly. Walking is pretty cheap.

Weight Watchers....I lost 52 lbs. and counting (33 wks - about 1 1/2 lbs a week)
Not expensive and they don't require that you buy their products, it's more learning to "eat to live rather than live to eat" lifestyle.
