Instinct.
We find superiority in differences as well as inclusion in likeness.
Picking on people is subjective to interpretation.
You can over come this by not caring about the people who don't care about you.
Like all investments, why invest in something that has a zero return on value invested?
Leaders lead, followers follow- what you are suggesting is that you care more about what others are thinking than what you are thinking.
I would suggest concentrating on finding your own set of priorities, values, and goals, and then blocking out all the background noise. Along the way to achievement you will find others who share the path you are walking that are of the same morale fiber- and before you know it- you will be in the "Top Quality" group, and those schmoes will be still dazed and confused idiots.

I don't like to pick on lesser people, I've brought my children up to feel the same. I spent ten years in the Army, the Rangers and the Special Forces a long time ago. I'm sure I can handle my self I have many times. I have nothing to prove. I don't believe using physical force when one can use other means. Teasing and horse play only causes problems and injuries, sometimes problems that can create some things that weren't mean to be.
It takes a small person with a small mind to pick on a lesser person.

It's human nature to want to feel good about yourself. Some people find it fun to pick on people because it makes them feel better about themselves (by putting others down, the picker-oners feel like they are in a high position and are better). We can find other ways to feel good about ourselves to stop picking on people, but picking on people is not necessarily a form of peer pressure but a choice the bully makes to put someone else down.

Just remember that kids in school that think they are the best, and that pick on other people are probably at the high points of their lives. Don't take it personally, it's just kids in school. It's not real life. Someday these people will be serving you fries.
When they make fun of you, just think to yourself about this. It's just school. Not the end of the world.

People make fun of others to make themselves feel better. If people were half as confident as they like to make themselves out to be they wouldn't have to make fun of others. As far as overcoming peer pressure just don't do it. Be your own person just because your friends make fun of others doesn't mean you have to.

Because it's mean you need to stop. Put yourself in their place and think about how you would feel. How very sad that this type of behavior is how some people entertain themselves. How very sad for them.
