Vegetables: Examples of the best are brocolli, cauliflower, spinach, cabbage, green beans. Limit root vegetables like potatoes, carrots, beets, etc. because they are higher in sugars.

Fruits: Examples of the best are berries, melons, citrus, and apples.

Breads/cereals: Best is anything in which the first ingredient is "whole" -- whole wheat, whole oats, etc. Just because the label says "wheat" does not mean it's WHOLE wheat; so you have to read the ingredients.

Nuts are great for you. The best are raw and unsalted (Trader Joe's has lots of choices).

Beans are very good for you.

Lean protein (grilled or broiled, not fried) - skinless chicken breasts, almost any type of seafood, lean cuts of beef.

Nonfat or 1% fat dairy products are very healthy.

AVOID - Enriched wheat flour, partially hydroginated oils, lard, sugar, and high fructose corn syrup.

I know you don't want to hear fruits but it's the truth. Any type is good for you but you should eat more veggies because fruits have more sugar in them. Any veggies are good. If you like sandwiches you should order low salt deli meats with light mayo on light wheat bread. Make sure to keep some protein in your diet with a cup of skim milk or snack on a cheese stick in the middle of the day.
