Yes, purgatory still exists.
Cheers :-)

I will readily admit that I am one of those Catholics who got it wrong until not too long ago. The Catholic church has most certainly de-emphasized the teaching of purgatory over the years. My wife's aunt is a Catholic nun and has been teaching Catholicism for over fifty years. We had a talk a few months ago and she agrees that the church has toned down its teaching about purgatory.
I also agree that some people confuse limbo with purgatory.

Just like a few Protestants, a few Jews, and a few Muslims, a few Catholics are not very informed about their faith.
Many non-Catholics and a few Catholic seem to have thought that Limbo and Purgatory were the same thing.
Helping people learn is one of our missions on Yahoo! Answers.

Why do some Catholics believe in it.. it's what they were taught, rather incorrectly. In days gone by they were not encouraged to read the Bible for themselves but only believe what they were told from the Catholic church heirarchy.
Purgatory is based on the Old Testament belief in Sheol, the place of the dead, which WAS a very real place. The only other place it is mentioned is in the Apocrypha which are not part of the 'official' Bible but sometimes included as 'historical writings'.
However Christ died, took our sins to the place called Sheol (hell) and took the 'good' who were there out with Him when He left - with the 'key to the gates of hell'. So now there are only unbelievers there. Anyone who now dies & goes there is in deep trouble as He's not going back again! Anyone who dies and believes goes to heaven, there is no hanging around for a second chance any more.
For those who argue that God is the same eternally, yes correct... God doesn't change from the OT to the NT but the world (including hell / sheol) most certainly has.

because people confuse purgatory with limbo (which was never dogma and has been declared it never will be. Not gotten rid of like something, just finally officially not accepted.)
Most people of all religions really don't know their faith.

Yes it is dogma, the church read Dante in 1294 and thought it was a good idea to scare preople into buying indulgences so they could get their own get out of h·ll free card and made it church dogma, but it didn´t exist before 1294. something tells me that it really doesn´t exist, but then most of what the church preaches doesn´t exist.

That's a good question, but I have no answer as to why they don't know their own teachings.
As for those who say there is no such thing as purgatory, then I guess that means that you (like you, Fish) get to sit right next to Hitler because he confessed with his dying breath. ...
yeah.....
