On Eighth Avenue between 34th and 35th Streets, the New Yorker is a famous hotel yet as far as creature comforts it's okay, not as elegant as the Wardolf or the Ritz. As far as neighborhood, Eighth Avenue is not that great. You have to be careful yet it's not truly dangerous.

In New York, location is everything. The New Yorker is only two blocks from Macy's and Manhattan Mall - lots of restaurants around. The New Yorker is an older property and rooms are smaller than what most are accustomed to outside the city. It is older but our rooms there have always been clean. Chances are you aren't going to spend a great deal of time in your room anyway so clean is the priority here!
Avoid the Hotel Pennsylvania in the same area.
Theater District and Times Square are within a 10-15 minute walk as well.
Thanks - enjoy the city!

The New Yorker is ok. The other guy's remarks about the pennsylvania are right stay away from that one. My main beef with the nyer is that the ac uses a motion detector to keep it on, you might wake up uncomfortably warm. Eighth ave really isn't bad. Come visit, have a good time, then go home. Oh btw please don't stand in the middle of the sidewalk outside the hotel, like a lot of those tourists do, they get in my way
