That has been done in several times. Both the old USSR and China have used the military for farm labor. There are several problems with this idea
1. A professional military has lots to do keeping it's equipment in shape and it's training up to standard.
2. It is not conducive to moral. Though there is nothing at all wrong with farm labor, many people joined up to avoid agricultural work.
3. It buts the military in competition for civilian jobs and opens the door to the kind of political abuse you see when you use prisoners for this type of work. Whose farm gets the benefit of the labor.

You are a complete moron. Why don't you put your life on the line as our troops do. Maybe a few of them should meet up with you. We'll see who's picking what!

used to do that in medieval ages, could now and return home and help plant crops once in a while or help out in iraq.strange thing in history soldiers who did so were not considered professionals or as good as those who did not. or army engineers could help out by building good crop systems if not already done.

I suppose if they weren't busy training to defend and actually defending our country, that would be a good idea. How about high school students? Or prisoners?
