SANTA FE (AP) — The Santa Fe Police Department is considering the possibility of recruiting Mexican nationals to fill vacant police jobs.

Sgts. Gillian Alessio and Marvin Paulk, who are in charge of the department’s recruiting and training, said Tuesday they are considering alternative approaches to fill 20 vacancies on the city’s 155-person police force.

But Police Chief Eric Johnson said New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy regulations prohibit non-citizens from serving as police officers.

“Every day, we get approached by young men and women from Mexico who are in the country legally but are not naturalized,” Alessio said.

“There is a huge pool of people who are dedicated, hardworking and trying to become citizens of this country. They would like nothing better than to devote their time to protecting the communities that they live in,” she said.

Isn't this outrageous? Now the police force wants cheap labor and fakes a shortage.

How are they faking a shortage and giving out cheap labor...obviously if this were to occur (and it won't because it's against their regulations) they will have to pay them a salary comparable to any probationary officer. I would suggest looking into Tyson and some of the major corporations in America that have actually suceeded in hiring illegal immigrants for cheap labor!

they would be paid the same rate as any other officer. how dare you say they "fake" a shortage? departments all around the country are short for officers.
i think if they can pass the academy, whats the problem

Wait, wait, wait. Read the article. They are not seeking illegal immigrants, they are seeking legal immigrants to fill vacancies.
These would be people with Permanent Residency status.
They are not going to hire illegal aliens for the police force that would be illegal.
Read the story completely before making a conclusion.
And yes, I am opposed to illegal immigration.

They are not seeking illegals. Just mexican nationals. While I still don't agree with that practice. It's not *as* horrible as you make it seem.

While I have no problem with anyone of any race being a police officer as long as they are dedicated. I would atleast like them to be a citizen.

It seems like it would be conflict on interest for the police officer. How are they able to enforce laws, including immigration laws, if they, themselves are in the country illegally? Usually no one can enter the police force if they have anything on their record, even minor things.

Illegal immigrants should not be allowed to hold any job in this country. I don't care where they come from, there are routes to becoming a citizen.

No one who is a criminal should be able to be a police officer. If you are in this country illegally, you are committing a crime. Period.

If they are illegal...then in no way should they be allowed at all to be on the force.
