Actually in the case of political parties labels give you a general idea of the persons beliefs. Republicans tend to be more conservative and Democrats are more liberal. Of course, you have your extremes in both parties and you also have the moderates. Some moderates can be closer to the other party's beliefs than they are to the extreme of their own party. Looking at someone's party affiliation is just a starting point. Depending on your own view point you decide how much you're going to look into any particular candidate. Although it is good to know about all of the candidates. The more you know the better you'll feel about your choice.

It is more than a "political label"! In general Republicans vote their pocketbook and democrats vote for a 2-way street, recognizing that we have poor people and they need to be taken care of.
Of course, Republicans are far better at corporate welfare than Democrats, and most Democrats recognize they are about 2 paychecks from poverty! A lesson Republicans should learn as almost ALL of you are in the same boat.
When we talk about tho poor and welfare, we recognize that almost ALL on assistance are children, the elderly and the disabled, none who could work, unless the Republicans want to undo a Democrat law that mandates that you can't use 12 year-olds for slave labor!

Well unfortunately politics today are extremely polarized. It's more about being on the winning team rather then what's best for the American people. Realistically it shouldn't matter if your a Dem or a Rep to make the a decision based on logic and ethics. However sense politics is more about one team beating the other at all costs. The most ethical and logical decision that is best for the American people is hardly the one made. It's sad that in today's America the American people are sitting sideline only able to watch the rich and privilege decide what laws are made in our country.

Labels mean everything in politics.
If somebody is a Democrat, and wants the support of the DNC in their campaigns.. they're going to have to stick pretty close to the official Democrat agenda. Ditto for Republicans. In reality you're voting for a party.. not for an individual.

Because a lot of us understand how the system works. Bad things happen under Democrat control of Congress. Not enough good things happen under Republican Control. The President needs to be a Republican because of his appointive powers. Look at the court system.

Labels don't mean anything anymore considering democrats and republicans tend to vote yes and no on the same issues and then when it comes time to run for president they try to talk their way out of their actions to win over people.

True, but few people look beyond the surface. And it's so easy to generalize, especially if one is being critical about some group that thinks differently than they do about an issue.
Really, it comes down to closed-mindedness and laziness. Sad, isn't it?
Granted, it is the opposite in my family - my Mom is a liberal democrat, my Dad is a conservative republican. They have been happily married for 40 years. My sister and her husband are liberal, my husband and I are conservative and we are all best friends... it works for us because of mutual respect and love of a great debate.

that is true there are some with the label who are more like the others. some say that both should just admit they are the same and form one party. they are the same on one issue they will never allow a party which interfers with their power.that is a goodpoint pity they did not come to that realisation along time ago then communist party could have been allowed. as to where is the analysis no where as both support iraq war and pretend to oppose eachother

Because many Americans lived their lives on labels. Think...many say only males can do this and females that and this ethnic groups is like this instead of realizing that everyone is inately different from each other. So when the average Americans turned on the news they relate to the labels instead of seeing what each canidate has to offer.

Politics, the ultimate team sport...
Disregard everything you were taught in grade school about civics and government. The pragmatic reality is that the biggest driver in politics is the team: being a team player, beating the other team, having the winningest team. Everything else is secondary.
The audience (citizens) is basically stuck with this format.
