A part time 4WD system is just that, its only for part time use, meaning it cannot be left engaged on dry pavement, as damage to the vehicle will occur. A full time 4WD system, as comes with some models of Jeep can be left engaged year-round if you wish, some of which do offer both systems in one transfer case that allows you to select 2WD, 4WD Part Time, 4WD Full Time, Neutral, and 4WD Low Range. Any system will work great, as long as you know how to use it. The only difference between a part-time and full-time system is whether or not you can leave it engaged all the time or not.

Generally a part-time 4WD system will get slightly better gas mileage than full time 4WD due to the front drive-line not being powered constantly.

Part time 4WD is simply the way they refer to vehicles that are usually driven by the rear wheels only, but have the capability of being driven as an all wheel drive in adverse conditions. I'd say a Jeep makes a lot of senses in Colorado.

This is different than full time four wheel drive in that it MUST NOT be used on dry pavement or ground. You can break the internal gearing. It is for loose conditions that will allow the wheels and tires to slip as you make a turn. SNow on the streets would be OK. It does not allow different front tire speeds from rear wheel speeds as occur in a turn. Nothing at all wrong with it, but check the manual as to how and when to use.

It means you can turn it off when you don't need it. Part-time 4wd can be very usefull in the snow but you have to make sure you turn it on for it to work.
