Yes, the issued equipment provides limited protection depending on the incoming round and the location of the hit. Also, remember that gunfire is not the main killer right now over there it seems. IEDs are taking more lives and causing more injuries then gunfire, because the IEDs can be set up to remotely detonate or detonate based on vibrations and the impact can be devastating. The cowards are getting away from gunfire because our troops generally win those confrontations. If you do join up, good luck and best of health to you. Take care!

Yes. They wear Kevlar helmets and Interceptor Ballistic Armor, or IBA, vests. The vests are doubly protected; they have flak inserts for shrapnel and have two removable ceramic plates, one in the front and one in the back, for bullets. They are standard uniform on convoys, patrols, cordon-and-searches, and pretty much anytime you step outside the wire or during an indirect fire attack such as mortar fire. On convoys it's usually a good idea to wear Wiley-X's or some other high-quality eye protection, mostly from dust. Combat soldiers often also wear knee protection and elbow protection in the form of pads, plus hand protection in the form of trigger gloves.

~Yes, but I've heard on the news that it's not the best. There is a shield that they can wear across their chest called "snakeskin." Some have bought it with their own money.~
*Get a grip ninjadude. We aren't giving protection to the enemy! Of course, they could take it off a soldier they've killed and find out what they wear that way too.

When I was in the army, in the Persian Gulf War (Desert Storm), I wore a Kevlar Helmet and a bullet proof vest. I also rode inside a tank, so I was pretty bullet-proof!
Yes, our soldiers are as protected as can be from enemy fire.

We wear kevlar helmets, flak vests, neck guards, groin guards, eye protection. We have vest that have big ballastic plates to protect us. A lot of the gear issued to you for protection depends on your job and mission.
