I just received my BA in English and I'm going to grad school in the Fall (night classes). I'm looking for full-time work w/ benefits for the next 2-3 years (or however long grad school takes)

I'm having a really hard time. Today I went for an administravtive assistant job and was basically told I was over quailfied. I have sent out at least 3 resumes a day and haven't heard back on many. I thought it was because I wasn't qualified, but now I'm thinking differently. However, when I try higher level positions, I'm too under qualified.

I've been looking for jobs for 3 weeks and I'm running out of money. I need a job to pay the bills.

I know I can get a job as a cashier or a waitress, but those jobs don't pay enough for my expenses and the health benefits I need.

When should I give up on the search and just settle for a min. wage job?

I had a position 4 years ago running a financial department and managing a staff of 6. That was then and this is now; I am currently sitting in grunt level position that is closer to home, but no where near what I made before. Yes it is disheartening, and yes embarrassing, but I have a house payment and other financial obligations. I was out of work for 6 months and worked a part time job at a department store to help make ends meet in the interim.

Give your self a little more than three weeks, and take something in the mean time to get you by....

Good Luck.

Given that you're getting a BA in English, have you tried getting Technical Writing jobs? There are many jobs that require good writing skills such as reporting for a small paper, teaching English, working at a major bookstore chain, or even some not for profit organizations -- they frequently need someone to help them write grant proposals.

Good luck -- job hunting can be difficult, especially when the job may not be one that you want to keep for a long time.

When to give up? Never, although you might have to take a lesser job for a short time in order to pay bills, never, never, never give up. Get your resume on Monster, Carrier Builder, Jobster, The local career link a the unemployment office. Blindly send your resume to local companies. See if you can get a certificate to teach. Finding a job is actually harder than doing one, but never give up, just keep thinking this next application could be the one.

Believe it or not, alot of public accounting firms hire English majors straight out of college and train them as auditors. Auditors have to do alot of writing. The largest four are Ernst & Young, Deloitte & Touche, KPMG and Price Waterhouse, Coopers, also known as "The Big 4." But there are several smaller firms. Just look under CPA's or Public accounting in the yellow pages. Good luck.

Don't give up! Why not go thru a Temp agency, or post resume on a job seeker website (such as monster.com, careerbuilder.com, quintcareers.com) You can also look for jobs at indeed.com (they not only search the job seeking websites like monster, they search local newspapers and the employers websites) You'll eventually find a job, trust me! Good Luck!

Why aren't you doing TA work? Don't most colleges offer positions to students as Teaching Assistants while in Grad school?

Don't settle. Go to several temporary agencies and have them send you on assignments as an admin. We often convert good temps into perm employees.
