My daughter has expressed interest in becoming one, but I'm having a hard time helping her find pathways to that specific career. What courses, starting her junior year in high school (she's a sophomore now) are good to take and does it matter what she majors in in college as long as she continues on to med school? At what point does she specialize? What's the salary range for an anesthesiologist? I believe that's why she's focused on this path so far... I honestly don't know that this is where she'll end up, but I'm glad she has a goal!

I've heard that it doesn't matter if you go premed, but that it could be better to major in biology or something like that. What's your take? Any real doctor's out there?

She needs to take pre-med and talk with anesthesiologists and anesthestists in the area. She needs to take a lot of bio and math, and focus on that.

If she wants to become a nurse anesthestist, she will make half of what an anesthesiologist does, but she will make a pretty penny. My dad is one, and because it's a dying field (Everyone is about to retire), they just offered a gal STILL in school a starting salary of $120K. Oh and that's in Kansas.

She needs to focus and do well, but she will also need to be in school a long time to become the MD. If she can afford it, great! If not, she needs to look at the nursing aspects which can be just as great.

If her goal is on the money, she needs to realize that working in surgery is TOUGH. Chances are she will work on-call unless she's in a day surgery, and she will work every moment in school AND on the job for each penny she earns. This isn't a job you can just sluff on. She will have to renew her license each year and take classes once a year, and she will HAVE to pay attention to detail.
