No other option to stop mother nature other than surgery.
He is not losing his balls BTW. They cut the sperm tube that carries sperm to the penis.
His balls deflate some but are still there and intact 100%. They are not "inflated" because they have no sperm pumping them up.
He will be fine.
Cat spray gets smellier each year the cat remains un neutered.
A nasty offensive and embarrassing smell. Who wants THAT in their home or on their furniture or on their clothes?
People talk major crap about people smelling like their pets piss.
No one wants to visit you or sit by you. Think about it.
On the bus one day an elderly lady REEKED of cat piss, it made my eyes water and made me gag! PLUS the heat was on full force and the windows were closed! We all opened the windows and sprayed whatever smelly spray was in our handbags all over the bus.
I actually got off at her stop (it was by mine) and talked to her about cats and the need to fix them or else.
She saw pictures of my cats in my wallet and we struck up a friendship so to speak. A week later I went into her home it was in sorry shape. Almost could be condemned by the city if they popped up.
I had to throw out ALL of her linens and couch and chairs.Throw rugs too..Then I scrubbed and scrubbed with cat urine smell remover sprays and all purpose sprays.
I got her ALL "new" clothes because her's reeked of piss.
She had an empty house basically because it was to far gone to save it.
3 years of allowing 3 male cats to spray sealed the deal. She did not let them out because she did not want to lose her only pals. :(
I got her help. I got her 3 boys fixed and vaccinated and checked out for free! Courtesy of the city animal shelter..They rocked!
She got furniture donated to her by the Goodwill. She got Ethan Allen stuff let me tell you I was jealous! lol...
Where can I get signed up for that deal?! Come on kitty's start peeing for momma! LOL...
I was happy for her, she was sweet, and her cats became spoiled, fat lap cats after their surgery! She was in heaven with her newly fixed friends!
Your cat WILL live a healthier, longer life as a fixed boy. He will be friendlier and cuddle more.
You are doing him a big favor. He will be happier this way.

I don't know if "desexing" is interchangeable with "neutering," but if it is, your girlfriend is right! His personality will not change a whole lot, though if it does he will calm down and almost certainly stop spraying; you also won't have to deal with him trying to escape in search of a lady or yowling for females. Neutering is a very common, safe procedure and you shouldn't be worried. Animals don't have any concepts of masculinity like humans do, so he won't feel like "less of a man" or anything. I don't know of any other options to neutering, but there's always the chance that, if unneutered, he could escape your house to mate with a female and end up with a nasty feline disease, or get hit by a car, attacked by a dog, etc. Basically I'm saying that by keeping him inside, you're already doing a good job, but if he goes on unneutered he will be more likely to try to escape.

Don't worry so much! Castrating a cat is not like castrating a human male because - cats aren't humans! Your cat will not know the difference, except he will feel happier because he won't have the constant urge to find a female and mate.
Your girlfriend is doing the right thing. Male cats should be castrated to protect their future health (prevents prostate and testicular cancer) and to stop them impregnating other cats (I know your cat is indoor but trust me in time he will get out because he's dying to find a female) Plus, once your cat is a bit older his urine is going to STINK like you would not believe! Unneutered tom cat spray is unbearable. Neutering them gets rid of the hormone that causes that stink.
Castration won't necessarily calm down a kitty, it will remove the urge to roam but it won't necessarily stop them being insane, that's just the way kittens are. Since you're getting it done early there's a good chance it will stop him spraying, but it isn't a guarantee. The main thing is it's being done, it's very important. And your cat will NOT hate you for it - that's just your perception!

Your cat will be much better off fixed. It will still act like the same cat you had, except a bit more relaxed, and more unlikely to take off, or spray your home. Which male cats do as they mature (spray urine). Neutering will also prevent certain diseases of cats, and he will live longer. You are doing the responsible and mature thing. Cats are notorious for getting out, even apartments, and disappearing. Male unneutered cats get into nasty fights over females. Your male will be less likely to get the urge to take off.
P.S. To the poster directly below - while the cat won't get FIV from mating, it can still get it from fighting - saliva and blood.

Don't feel bad for the cat. Really.
I know it's easy to give the cat the same feelings you would have if you were to be... "de-sexed." But it will make things easier, actually.
Cat's spray to mark their territory. They have the urge to mark their territory because of the hormones produced in their "balls."
This will also keep him from trying to get outside - to look for a female. And in the event (even though he's an inside cat) does get out, he won't be able to make more kitties.

i could probably ring around to the vets first then. If no longer attempt as a replace of the rspsa attempt calling a animal welfare league they could be very effective and could provide you a decreased cost in case you are able to no longer have sufficient money complete cost I even have 3 cats and this is extremely severe priced and ladies folk fee better than men. i'm not sure approximately for unfastened on the rspca i think of you are able to could desire to be a pensioner or you are able to could desire to grant up the animal it truthfully relies upon on there polices solid success.
