It is best if you go to a professional colorist. Never use those drugstore boxes - they are terrible. Some of them contain metallic dye that will cause this funny colors like orange and green(!)

If you must, do the bleaching yourslef. There is a powder sold in Beauty supply stores, it's called "Blue ... something", ask about it. Use 30 volume developer and bleach it. It has directions on the package. It's not so bad - I did it myself too, going from artificial auburn to extreme blond. Red is the hardest color to get out.

Blue "cancels" red. You can try a toner that is base blue. It is easier on your hair than bleaching. Use 10 or 20 volume developer.

I am a licensed cosmetologist and I am sorry to say this but you are going to have to give up and go seek professional help. First mistake was box color. Second is you cannot lighten dark colored hair with box color alone. So what will happen is exactly what you described, your regrowth (new hair, roots, whatever you want to call it) will get light or close to the color on the box, but the rest of your hair will not. What will end up happening if you don't get professional help is you will either have different colored band around your head until they grow out, or until you give up and dye your hair dark again just to be done with it. Also don't try to lighten it on your own you could make it worse, or even worse damage your hair. Start calling salons to see how much they will charge you for a corrective color, explain what your hair looks like so they will know what they are dealing with and exactly what steps will be involved with fixing it. It isn't a lost cause but seriously go have a professional fix it, and then don't do anything too drastic again without a professionals help. You can upkeep a strawberry blond or dark by yourself, it is just trying to go back and forth especially from dark to light that you should have a professional do.

Do not I repeat Do not get a color remover or corrector on your own, because these are very seriuos chemicals, which can cause burns to your scalp, and ultimatley cause your hair to fall out if you do not know what you are doing. Plus the ones you would need to buy you can't even buy at Sally's without a cosmetology license. Please trust me on this!

You need to get a color correction. You pretty much need to use a color remover to strip out all of the colors you have put on top of your natural color. You can get color remover from sally's in which you mix it w/ a developer. But I recommend you go to a salon to get it done. because all of the colors you put on it might not fully come out in which you can dye your hair back to it's naturally color so when it starts to grow out again it will blend and you won't need to put more dye in your hair to touch it up. Good luck. Hope I helped. Please add me to your contacts and email me w/ any hair questions you have via yahoo answers.
