It depends on your state. My state CO, requires at least 3 continuous years. Others require it for all drivers, all the time. Ask your insurance agent, or call your local DMV.

You mean how long do you need auto insurance (which is what proof of financial responsibility is)? For as long as you own and drive an auto.
