my husband started when he was 11. He has been playing for 40 years now, and says, there are good days and there are bad days. As a kid, it's difficult to learn the breath support and the embouchure needed to keep yourself from fainting. Most horn players come into their stride by about 19 or 20. Even so, if your levels of concentration are poor, you'll find that you'll have more burps than notes. He says it's the most noble instrument in his opinion, but, he'd have to say that, wouldn't he?
He also plays Wagner tuba, which is a related and rare instrument, and even more difficult to play in tune since it has more plumbing to get the air through.
Good luck to you!

Yes it is. I played it for 6 years, starting in Jr. High through High school. you can give it a try, but it takes a big commitment, and a big helping of natural talent for it. With out the natural talent, you can practice and practice and you will still sound you are strangling a cat. Good luck!

Don't listen to some of these answers, as it is clear they never actually played it. a trumpet is so easy a monkey can play it.

It's not extremely hard, but it's not as easy as something like the flute, which I play. On, say, the flute, if you push the right buttons you'll get the right note. On the french horn, if you push the right buttons, you may not always get the right note. You have to firm up your lips and such to get the right note.

A friend of mine played it in the University symphony and he DID say it was difficult. There was one part during Beethoven's 3rd Symphony where I thought the kid was going to faint...there were so many, quick, short notes! He got through it, but it was not the greatest performance.

Not really. I had started with a trumpet and later played most brass as they basically the same. If, this your first instrument Brass is about the easiest to learn.

I don't know, I never played an instrument besides Recorder and piano... but if you think it's hard, practice over summer.
