Clothes are always good. Even clothes he can wear in a few months. But maybe you could find out if the mother had a baby shower and then get him things he'll need like a bath tub, or shampoo, powder, toys, stuffed animal, blankets, etc.
The baby stuff can get pricey and chances are he still needs things that momma hasn't got yet.

I can recall that I was a bit picky on the big ticket items:
stroller, changing table, diaper bag, etc.
Many people buy newborn clothes and newborns usually wear p.j.'s or onesies most of the day.
Baby clothes sizes are about double the age.
So, a 3 month old would wear around 6 month size.
I usually buy 1T or 2T clothes for later on down the line. This way the mom will already have some things in the closet for when baby turns 6 mos. to a year.

uh-what? You can't buy a baby...didn't you watch that episode of Friends? Haha, I am guessing I don't understand your question
I'm editing my question now because I see you wrote "what" not "where" haha.
Okay, well I suggest diapers because they are expensive and babies go through a lot. We had a diaper party for a new mom.
Also, this rash cream stuff called Zincofax is super good for babies and allows them to be comfortable.
If you're gonna buy clothes, don't get newborn ones because a lot of people are probably buying him/her clothes now and this way the baby can grow into them and have some clothes when not so many are being bought for them.
Happy Shopping

What can't you give a newborn!!!! Newborns always need clothes, the more the better, as they are always making a mess on themselves. However, don't limit yourself to buying only newborn clothes.....also buy sizes 3-6 months, which is always appreciated, especially once the baby starts growing out of newborn sizes. Also, diapers! Buy newborn and the next size up...that really helped me out tons! Baby wipes, lotion, baby body wash, baby shampoo, powder and diaper cream are also great gifts. Hats and blankets are also much needed. If the mother is bottle-feeding then buy bottles and maybe a bottle warmer if they don't already have one. Parents also love to receive photo albums and other keepsake items.

Get him some clothes in bigger sizes. Everyone always buys cutesy little newborn sized clothes for new babies, and they grow out of everything before they get to wear any of it. I always buy clothing for when the kid gets older (6-9 months) so that he will have something to wear as he gets a bit bigger. And get him a soft terry rattle. My nephews always loved those. Soft rattles are soft and fuzzy (and soak up drool), but they still make noise.

Buy him something that he needs like a case pampers, case of wipes, plenty of onesis. No need to buy a lot of clothes because babies outgrow them so fast and a newborn will likely not be going any places. Also if the baby uses formula and you know the kind he uses buy formula milk is expensive.

Some onesies, undershirts, bibs, bottles, and a case of diapers (pampers whatever they are using) a stuffed animal and something like a savingsbond or open an account in his name and put $5 or $10 a week in the account for it to be his when he turns 18 years old. I think any of these would be very considerate and loving ideas.

If it's a baby that has everything, a US savings bond could be nice. That way he could spend the money how he wants when he's old enough to decide what to do with it. Last time I checked, a $100 bond sold for about $50 and took between seven and ten years to mature.

Clothes can always be used. My mother usually buys 3 different sets for different ages since babies grow so fast. But makes sure that if you buy something that he can wear in a few months its appropriate for whatever season it is then. Blankets and bibs are also good.
