We have a large collection of mini DV tapes from a camcorder and I'd like to be able to copy them onto our PC without having to plug in the camcorder.

Yes, a few companies make them, jvc is probably the cheapest entry route for an SVHS/MiniDV twin deck, however if you can run to it I would go for a Sony dvcam deck, like the DSR11 or M15 (HDV compatible, more future proofed) be aware that the cost of any miniDV standalone unit is going to be many times that of a cheap DV camcorder, depending on how large large is (10's buy a camcorder for this purpose alone, 100's buy a deck) even cheap SONY dv camcorder should handle things like DVCAM, if thats important. Most professional decks will handle LP, but few will deal with EP and beyond...

yes, i have a sony dual deck made for the japanese market. another alternative is the Sony miniDV Walkman (GVD 1000), it has a firewire port and can be controlled directly from the computer. however both options will cost more than a simple miniDV camcorder.
