If you really believe in yourself, you will be good even when you are 99 years old.Unless you like to play and want really to learn, you will not become a good instrument player...

A head start helps, but you're never too old to learn, especially if you love the instrument. It may take a little while to master the basics, and it may be frustrating at the beginning---the violin is not the easiest of instruments to learn---but if you stick with it, and genuinely enjoy playing, there's nothing to stop you. The best thing you can do is find a good teacher and start taking lessons; I started on the Suzuki method, which does inhibit sight-reading a little later on, but is overall very helpful and comprehensive when you're first learning to play. Try out a couple of instruments, and find one that feels right; preferably, rent before buying, as a good violin is a pretty significant financial commitment. But most importantly, enjoy playing! Don't give up right away if it's difficult---as long as you have the desire to play, and are willing to put in the practice time, you will be rewarded by visible improvement.

Good luck!

Well, you won't make it to Carnegie hall, but most people who start at age 2 don't get there anyway. I picked up the violin at 23, and I played with a local symphony within 2 years. Get a good teacher, practice, and you can play as well as most people who have been playing for a while.

I recommend renting an instrument for a few months to get a feeling for what you want before you invest in one.

I think you are never too old to learn anything. As for bcoming good at it-that's not a question of age, but of how much you want it and how much you're willing to work to get there. If you really like the instrument, you should love the music it makes and become passionate about playing it well.

You can certainly learn to play violin at that age. You need to try very hard, though because as a person gets older, their fingers and wrists cant bend as unnaturally as they used to. That`s why it is suggested that you play violin when you are a child. You could probably even be able to play it professionally if you were passionate about it and you really wanted to. Remember that you dont have to be the next Perlman to be a professional violinist.

"Doctor, will I be able to play the violin after this operation?"

"Of course, you'll be able to play just fine!"

"Good, because I can't play it now!"

But seriously, folks - you're never too old to learn. Younger people learn faster, but anyone can learn. 17 is actually quite young. Being good is a combination of some innate talent and practice, practice, practice.

Sure you can do it! I've heard that the "Suzuki" method (I think that's what it's called) is easier and often for people using it as a hobby. HOWEVER...if you don't have a "good ear" (can't tell if you're off key), then please pick a FRETTED instrument, like mandolin or guitar! My sister plays bluegrass fiddle and it sounds like a cat being tortured! UGH! If, after you've been at it awhile, someone tells you you're flat or sharp, don't get mad...get another instrument.

Maybe you should learn the viola - it's a violin only slightly bigger and friendlier sounding. Also viola players are always wanted in orchestras and chamber music groups, so people will always want to play with you.

A woman started taking ballet lessons in her seventies. If you have a dream, go for it. You will just have to practice a lot.
